Nicely laid out site with good sized pitches. Quiet even when full. Close to town. Lovely facilities including a lounge. Very clean. Well organised with clear communication before arrival. Only slight downside is barrier has a code pad which is practically impossible to get to from a motorhome which is frustrating. What to say? for me, a regular visitor, somewhere to relax and just enjoy kirkwall and surroundings. This is an excellent base to explore all of Orkney and its islands, and also to use as a stepping stone on a boat to shetland. I am a lazy visitor, and for food I recommend the St Magnus cafe Just opposite the cathedral. OK occasionally also the fish and chip shop near the harbour is excellent. The site is part of a community centre close to town and has cinema, swimming pool and sports facilities for campers and residents alike. We booked a non electric tent pitch for three nights, which was flat and spacious; it was quite muddy, but I guess that's to be imputed to the period and to a particularly rainy summer. The indoor facilities are very good and heated throughout: clean kitchen with several washing up stations, fridges, microwave and kettle. There is a laundry room with washing machines, tumble dryers and limited space on drying racks (customers tend to leave their stuff on the drying racks for days). Bathrooms and showers are in the same, ample cubicle, which I really appreciated. There is a common room with sofas, tv, board games and books. I first came to Orkney 20 years ago, seeking the Neolithic. In 2024 I discovered Orkney Caravan Park. I have stayed there with tent and small camper van. Both stays are made easier by the common room and the facilities there. The location is very convenient for walking into Kirkwall and the local Tesco and Lidl.

We found the facilities at the campsite very good - clean showers and kitchen area. The downside for us was that the hard standing pitches at the bottom were tarmac and stayed relatively dry. Unfortunately, we were on a gravel type pitch and had a constant puddle that we couldn't avoid. The pitch was also difficult to reverse onto due to the tap opposite unless we drive onto the grass and risked getting stuck as it was very soft with all the rain...Read less.

Camping in Orkney can be challenging. This campsite offers some helpful practical support for making it work: the 20% off deal with the next-door Pickaquoy leisure centre helps, as does the proximity to town and to the supermarkets. Most helpful I think are the indoor "living room" and kitchen areas, and the knowledgeable staff. It's not always weather for visiting Orkney's many sites of interest, but sitting in the tent/van isn't alqays practical either. The option to spend an hour indoors with a cup of tea, without having to spend money in cafes and bars, is quite the relief. Good thinking Pickaquoy....Read less.

one important omission is an emergency phone number that is answered. The electricity went off at 5.00pm on Sunday 23rd August our last night of a 4 night stay. This was only switched back on at 9.00am on the Monday 24th so we had no refrigerator power for 24 hours until we moved to our next camping site. What if something more serious had happened? Loved this campsite. Its in an excellent position in the centre of Kirkwall with the Leisure Centre next door and the Peedie Sea across from it. Easily walkable to town centre and harbour/ferry ports. Excellent site within walking distance of the leisure centre and Tesco's, co-op and Lidl. Also further you have the town centre and shops, harbour and the bus station. Plenty of things to do on your doorstep.

This is the second time we have stayed at the Pickaquoy caravan site and we will be back again! The children love the freedom of playing around the site and cycling. It is in a great location. We arrived off the Northlink and it was just a 6 minute drive to get to it. The only negative I have to address is the temperature of the showers. They are extremely hot and our children really struggled to shower in them as they were unable to suffer the hot water....Read less.

The pod we stayed in was clean and basic which was as advertised, I wasn’t expecting anything else. I felt, however, that it was actually quite a big space and had a lot of potential to convert it into a glamping pod with a shower and little kitchen. The storage area and cupboards could be improved. I loved that it had a no dog policy.

The facilities were clean, however, other customers were bringing their dogs into the shower facilities and I found that a bit disgusting. I probably wouldn’t stay anywhere I had to share shower and bathroom facilities with other customers again.

If you have a family this is for you, good central location, with a Play park next door, good hard standing & tarmac roads. Personally, I found the children riding their bikes everywhere slightly dangerous. The caravan that turned up very late next to my pitch was inflating an airbed at 23;55hrs very annoying, as the pitches are quite close so you can hear everything. The toilets & shower block: the previous shower occupant hadn’t cleaned the floor (inconsiderate), the toilets/showers need a bit of a touch up in places. They say they clean them daily but I get the feeling they don’t clean around the taps unless it’s really messy as there was a lot on lint dust!...Read less.

Our only niggle was that we were allocated a pitch which was difficult to access with a campervan, due to concrete walls round the refuse area. I was happy with the facilities, the cleanliness of the facilities. We only saw one staff member who was very helpful and pleasant. The only negative was a bit of an odour in the Magnus hut? Besides that it was suitable for our needs. The site itself was very clean and tidy. It is a good distance from facilities, easy enough to walk to but far enough away not to be bothered by the noise of the town centre. It is also close to the ferry terminal which was handy. My husband and i stayed on the site for 16 nights. The site is well organised with lovely hot showers in individual cubicles for any sex to use all with lockable doors. These have a shower curtain, seat, hooks, toilet & sink with a peddle bin also in each room. There are 4 rooms with baby changing facilities and a toilet and sink in there too with bin.

I used the laundry room which has washing machines & tumble dryers these cost £5 (in £1 coins) two large sinks for hand washing, and two large air dryers, the room is warm and so washing can be left overnight to dry (which i did)

There is a dish washing room (I didn’t use this) then a communal lounging area for people to meet, this had lots of books, toys and games for children to use while they are there.

The Warden was usually around either in the office or cleaning so if you have any problems they are there to help or give advice. The pitches are well set out and kept clean and tidy. There are bins for re-cycling. Perfect site!...Read less.

Very clean and tidy site and great central location. Main reason we stayed was with the leisure centre pool being next door for us to take our 4yr old son in days of poor weather. On arrival we were informed the pool had been closed for a number of months and the cinema had just recently broke. I have been returning to this campsite regularly for the last 20 years and am always impressed with the friendliness of staff, high standard of facilities, cleanliness and general upkeep, accessibility to local amenities. I would highly recommend this campsite to considerate and respectful camper.

Orkney is a super place to visit and this campsite is always my first choice.

On this visit (July 2026) I found that everything was to it's usual highest standard......except for the lack of consideration of a few other campers. Here are a couple of examples:-

- the kitchen area was always full of either dirty dishes or dishes that had been half-heartedly washed and not put away.

- Some people were bringing their dogs into the lounge area to feed them and allowing dogs to lay on the chairs. On one occasion I had to wash the tables before use because they were full of dog hair. We rarely stop on large sites, but we found this site surpassed our expectations. Plenty of space and the site was much quieter than we had anticipated.

We really liked having the toilet in the shower room.

Good site for access to town. Very clean facilities. Friendly wardens. Bike hire very reasonable. Quick commercial washers and driers but at a cost of £10 per load for drying which is expensive in comparison to other sites. Outside drying facilities good. The WiFi on site is poor and needs to be upgraded. So slow couldn’t do standard browsing. 4G connectivity also slow as all on site having to use due to lack of WiFi....Read less.
