We were booked for one night here with our motorhome but with Storm Ashley about to hit we wanted to book the night before as well. When we arrived, it was out of hours for the warden being there but we were signposted to the very helpful staff at the Leisure Centre next door who quickly got us sorted on on our pitch. The site is well laid out and the facilities are excellent - the individual shower/toilet cubicles; the cooking/washing up facilities - and toilet/grey water disposal. The staff are great and the place is clean and tidy with good facilities, the shower rooms are freezing (windows left open for ventilation) but that is balenced out by the showers being boiling.

The internet is useless if more than one person is using it, but the mobile signal is great so most people would be fine anyway.

The microwave in the kitchen is great for quick easy food, although a second would be nice for busy mealtimes. There are plenty of sinks for washing up.

Overall it is definitely the best campsite on Orkney and the price is good compared to down south....Read less.

This is a well laid out site with good hard standing and importantly for Orkney, good drainage when wet. The grey water and toilet disposal points are at the entrance with parking. The shower rooms with basin and toilet were excellent but chilly as windows have to be left open for ventilation. There is a lounge area especially handy for the campers. Not many water points but we were luckily in reach of one on pitch 12. Really good power supply that never tripped out. Within walking distance of the supermarkets and the town and good dog walking just across the road. If the toilet block was warmer would have been 5*. The pod was more than just a pod. After a long ferry the site was a 40 minute stroll from the North link ferry. The site info and codes sent before hand was perfect. Pod beds, warmth, dehumidifier etc was stunning. Thankfully no television. WiFi was mostly good. Onsite individual showers and facilities were perfect and only a 10 minute stroll to the town centre. Everything is automated with little if any interaction with staff. We were happy to have a pitch close to the entrance and facilities. But that did mean we were asked for info (eg entry code) on several occasions. Someone even knocked on my van door when I was napping. Not everyone reads their booking confirmation in depth - so they didn’t know there was a code or that pitch numbers were listed outside the office. When I did see a member of staff in the office, they did not attempt to greet anyone, just looked at their computer. The facilities themselves were very good (apart from the charge for hairdryer use, seems a bit petty). Would have appreciated info about the immediate locality eg are there any pubs/restaurants in walking distance...Read less.

What a let down this place is. Within minutes didnt feel safe, nearly turned round and found somewhere else to stay. It looked like a travellers site. Pitches too small, grass verges chewed up. Groups of people walking over our pitch on the way to the leisure centre. Toilets and showers disgusting. Guaranteed never to return. Would rather park up next to the M6 motorway than stay at this dump. The worst site we have ever stayed at, and we have travelled extensively....Read less.

On booking the campsite, I booked a tent pitch with a hard standing due to the wet forecast. Whilst on the ferry I received an email asking if I had a car. I said no, a motorcycle. On arrival I was informed I couldn’t have the pitch for reasons not explained. I was directed to the camping field which as you can imaging over the duration of my stay became wetter and slippier. Which whilst being a motorcycle rider and not a car driver made parking by my tent quite dangerous. No reason was given as to why I couldn’t use a hard standing pitch, and as 75% were not being used I found quite annoying, especially as I had booked one on your website. If I wasn’t allowed to have a tent in a pitch with a hard standing then why was it offered when I booked. A response would be appreciated....Read less.

Nice central site for shops and historic sites. Large hard standing and grass garden area. Shower block had individual shower, and toilet giving plenty of space. The only drawback was the floor squeezy which was a little too big and hard to clean the floor after use. Unfortunately when we were there the ground was pretty wet and to my dismay some vans chose not to be careful manoeuvring and churned up the ground....Read less.

We enjoyed staying at this site very much. It was close to the city centre and central for discovering wider Orkney.

Latterly, when our dog needed treatment the superb local vet (Flett and Carmichael) was within walking distance.

Facilities offered everything you may need although the showers block was very wet, damp and a wee bit chilly. From arriving at the campsite it is well secured and all self explanatory to gain access to everything. Clean and tidy, the pod I was staying in was better than the hotel room I had in Aberdeen the night before.. it had everything in it that you need to enjoy your stay. Was clean tidy and warm. The facilities on the site were the best I have ever seen and showers were good to with a squeegee to clean behind you and cleaning stuff as well. It was well looked after. Nice as a short walk into town and shops near by. Ideal for families going the with the centre next door as I went in for a swim and a sauna plus it has so much more. A good base for touring the island. I will be back next year and use the pods again as it was great especially if your not into camping and don’t have a caravan as you still get the experience of camping but your just a little more glamping lol. Only thing to improve would be making grass at side of pitch for only one of the pitches rather than any old how.

The staff on our arrival in our Motorhome were very friendly and informative. We have wi-fi in our Motorhome which was poor, so we connected to the site wi-fi which was even worse.

We went in the communal lounge on numerous occasions to wash dishes, use washing machine and dryer etc. , every time there was the same family there, male and female partner and two teenage children boy and girl sprawled on the seats. No matter what time of day this family were there between 8am and 9pm that I know of, it could have been longer. I noticed that the man seemed to be working and he had at least eight devices connected to the internet, this clearly would effect on the wi-fi for the rest of the site.

So apart from not having any wi-fi I found the site to be ideally situated to all attractions and convenient for Kirkwall....Read less.

We had an excellent welcome on arrival and were able to choose a different pitch from the one we selected on line, which turned out to be too short for our 7.5m motorhome. The positive points for us are proximity to Kirkwall and its location to explore mainland and the other islands. Although there are a range of facilities our use was limited as a family was clearly using the site as temporary living accommodation, including dogs, and were permanently using the lounge. The shower rooms, although surface cleaned each day were not deep hygiene cleaned, so never looked or smelled clean. They are in dire need of upgrading, with black mold on the shower curtains, floor and wall coverings delaminating and generally shabby. Because the toilet and shower are alongside each other I felt that hygiene was a real issue on this site. Because of it's location I might consider using it again, but will explore other options first....Read less.

It has been many years since I have used campsites and what I didn't particularly enjoy was seperate shower cubicles, seperate toilet cubicles and communal sinks.

Absolutely nothing like that here a multitude of wet rooms. All equipped with a shower, a toilet, a sink and all spotlessly clean.

So no rushing to the toilet block at 5 in the morning to try and get washed etc, before the rush hour started...bliss.

Finding and accessing the site...easy find Tesco and you are within 400 metres on the same road

Site itself is very well laid out, tidy and well maintained and spotless.

When booking pick the stance you want and you are safe in the knowledge that it will be there for you when you arrive.

This is a good location for exploring the wealth of scenery, history and attractions as well as numerous other islands accessible from the Ferry terminal just 5 minutes away. We stayed at this site for 8 nights in August 2024. The site was well laid out and the facilities amongst the best we’ve encountered. The seperate wc/shower cubicles with instant hot water were brilliant and plentiful - despite the site being full we never had to wait. We loved our stay staff appeared to be very approachable. Our outside light wasn’t working but maintenance team were prompt and replaced lamp. Shower block was very good with lots of toilets and showers. It would have been better if decking for pod had a bit more cover. As our weather was rather rainy and outside deck and table very wet. Everything was perfect, the site, installations and staff. The location is also very good, with sports center and supermarkets really near. The price is very fair for the services, but I missed:

- A cooking zone, With your climate, I think it would be a good idea to have an space protected of the wind and rain.

- A recycling bin that includes everything, not only plastic bottles and aluminium cans. I imagine that there should be a reason for it, but having to put plastics and some cans in the general waste is not acceptable in our times.

Loved the location - ability to wander into town . Didn't use the lounge but appreciated others would . Kitchen facilities were great .

Hi Folks, I enjoyed my stay at Pickaquoy a really good campsite and amazingly quiet considering it's location, ie not rural and on the edge of town.

The staff were very pleasant and helpful with any queries I had.

They had to work hard to keep the showers etc clean as some on the site made their job harder than it should have been. Great effort from all members of the team!!

Because of the size of the kitchen it was a great place to socialise with others on the site. I'd definitely use Pickaquoy again, a 15 min walk and in the centre of town with it's amazing Cathedral, museum and it's exhibition of Ness of Brodgar.

The charity shops are better than some stores!! Three supermarkets within easy walking distance. It all adds up for me to a great experience. My friends would use it on my say so.

Look after it and keep the price right, we are not all loaded!!
