There are great views at this site! Lovely spacious hard standing pitches too. It’s only a short walk into Riddings and there is a bus stop just outside the site for exploring. Great location!

Pitches on a slope ,inadequate bins for the amount of people staying. Tent pitches to close together ,reminded me of sardines on a can. Showers £1 for 10 mins, toilet block was clean though.

The park and its surroundings are lovely. We had a camping pitch with hookup across from

The reception and our ground was fairly flat. However the whole park is on a hill so maybe take something to overcome the slant. It was a quiet site which is lovely and if you do get a little noisy the security come to quiet you down. During my stay the only thing I would say bothered me was the shower facilities. The shower itself was lovely a nice powerful warm shower. I went for a shower at 7.45 and waited for 20mins.... I went in cubicle 3 out of 3 and the floor space to get changed was less than 1m squared so once you'd got you towel and clothes on a peg changing was very restrictive. I know cubicle 2 was large with a toilet in there also....Read less.

Tent pitches not unlimited as stated, less than a foot away from neighbours, not enough toilets and showers for size of the site, ran out of toilet paper and soap for two days, two sinks to service whole site as one was taped up, showers dirty and had mold in, only one water tap for whole site. Ridings wood is a beautiful, well maintained campsite. Absolutely no complaints about the park, the facilities or the staff. If you are looking for a campsite with woods to enjoy them this is perfect. However the surrounding area isn't great. There are no picturesque walks our scenery as you would expect in Derbyshire and the village is not quaint and lovely to walk around. There are parks and reservoir near by but they were not beautiful by any means. So I'm short if it's a wonderful friendly clean campsite you require then this place is great, but if you intend to use it as a base for exploring then it's not so good unless you intend to drive. ...........Read less.

The staff were friendly and helpful.

There was only a couple of general maintenance things that could have been improved in the shower/toilet block and if done, would have made it a five star stay -its always the small things that matter!

1. The soap dispensers were never refilled in the whole week we were there

1, Dis-organised site, every pitch was trying to annex the toilet block to their pitch, 2,Children playing in the woods behind our pitch, but that's OK their parents were not upset,3, The pitch next to us did not have enough room for his outfit so parked on our grassed area, but not for long soon sorted.4,On our last day the large bins were overflowing almost to the point of them disappearing ,5,On our last evening around 6,30pm we were walking our dog on the dog walk area, following us were 2 men,2 ladies & a dog, when one of the men decided to urinate against the fence, totally not interested in the fact that there were other people around who did not wish to see this act, clearly he was far to lazy to walk to the toilet block &yes he was off the site.

Lovely little campsite and touring park. Extra bonus for us, we got 4 pitches all to ourselves as they were all vacant. We couldn't of selected a better pitch either, at the top of the park looking down hill over some brilliant scenery. The weather was superb too (but not for our doggies - too hot) The walks through the woods are great for dogs and Riddings Village is well worth a visit. 2 pubs there - Quality.

Downsides :-( The septic tank, which we smelt occasionally from our pitch, but you have to walk right by it to get to the woods. My real upset though was the toilets/shower rooms not being cleaned on Sunday, we were there through to the Monday and new people arrived on the Sunday too. There was no toilet paper, no soap wash and the facilities had been left in an appalling condition by the departing masses. I don't know if the site had a reason for not providing cleaning services on this day or if its something that happens every Sunday, but it really isn't acceptable to leave these facilities unattended for 48 hours....Read less.

Smell from the septic tank next to our van was very unpleasant. When we arrived the manager informed us that the septic tank near our pitch was due to be emptied that day. We arrived on Thursday and by Friday it still hadn't been emptied and a site worker had started sealing the lids to the septic tank with expanding foam in order as he said to solve the problem, which it didn't. I asked the manager again when the tank was due to be emptied particularly as the site was going to be full at the weekend, His answer was " Hopefully today" to which replied " Could you not chase them up?" to which the response was non-committal. By Friday evening the site was extremely full with people pitching their tents with no involvement from the management. I’ve heard on bank holidays they have a disco but then peoples electric doesn’t work even if u’ve paid for it. If you complain your in trouble! A family was asked to pack up and leave because they complained. Even with children and an elderly mother. They even called the police. Very bizzare. Apparently staff really friendly unless you have any problems. Having heard this from a lovely family it would put me off ever going back.

A friendly welcome from Warden, view from top of site looked very good, but, from then on it all went downhill, quite literally. Top of site has terraces, larger lower part is very sloping and difficult for both caravan and tents. A long list of rules (totally acceptable) but completely ignored and unenforced. Vehicles speeding around with children playing, dogs roaming freely, noise until well after midnight. Only 2 water taps at top of site, tents placed very close with one dog tethered to within 6 inches of water pipe, ball games far too close to cars/caravans.

Seemed to be very much a case of pay your money (extra for showers) and just get on with it!

I am totally disappointed with your this caravan park and would not recommend it at all. On arrival we was given a pitch which was totally unacceptable for a motor-home being at a steep angle and on asking for another pitch (plenty of empty hard standing level pitches ) was told to park in the middle of the camping field - totally unacceptable. I booked and paid for a hard standing pitch with electric !!!! When then returning to the warden in charge, who was totally of no help and had a couldn’t care less attitude, to tell him we were leaving, he suddenly said there are options - why were we not told these “options” after the first pitch basically because her couldn't be bothered. We left disgusted and disappointed due to us having to either find another place to stay or drive home totally spoiling our weekend. 3 Every one is far to close together, spread all pitches apart a bit, people like space and if you did this more people would return, it would be more cost effective.

4 Plant a few trees on top tent pitches create some small thin hedge bariers, people like to talk to adjasent pitches but like a bit of privacy.

5 Place a few more water taps around the bottom tent sites.

On a positive note the park has a great view and the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Our pitch was flat and the free wifi was great. The toilet facilities were spotlessly clean on the Saturday. Negative points were the toilets were disgusting on the Sunday morning - no toilet tissue/filthy toilets/rubbish and urine on the floor this was between the hours of 6-11am when we vacated the park. I felt the tent pitches with electric were on top of each other luckily there was a free pitch next to us so we had a bit of space to sit outside our tent. We had already prebooked a weekend in July before this visit otherwise being totally honest I dont think we would return.

Our first time camping with the children in tow so we wanted to keep it fairly local.

Arrived on site to main office, check in was fairly swift, we were pointed in the direction of our pitches, given barrier codes and a map and waited until the onsite helper could point us in to where we could pitch our tent/park our car. We did have to ask a few times for him to reiterate where exactly we could pitch our tent as the pitches weren't marked up and we wanted to check we weren't in anyone else's booked space, he was very helpful though.

The park was beautifully clean, wash room facilities kept spotless- my only gripe would be the smell of raw sewerage wafting over the park from the toilet block which wasn't very pleasant.

The children's play area was a lovely added extra to the park and our three children thoroughly enjoyed it.

Would definitely come back for a short break....Read less.

We were expecting the site's promised "11 acres of woodland in the tranquil and idyllic Derbyshire countryside offering a quiet and relaxing retreat" but were instead faced with a campsite which was absolutely jam packed with tents which were so squashed in, dangerously close and in breach of fire safety regulations.

I appreciate it was half-term and that the site would be busy, but it was unacceptably filthy. The bins were not simply overflowing, they were almost hidden from view behind walls of rubbish spilling over. The site smelt of sewerage across the whole 4 days we were there; not just when the site was at its busiest, but also on the Sunday and Monday when most of the half-term holiday campers had left, suggesting the water treatment plant is not capable of dealing with the site sewerage requirements.

The two wardens were friendly and as helpful are they could possibly be, given the unreasonably high numbers of tents and caravans being accommodated during the four days we stayed. It is simply not possible for two wardens to manage such a sizeable number; the site is understaffed and suffers badly as a result.

I suggest the local Council should visit this site quickly to review how it is operating in term of hygiene and health and safety, and whether its licence should be revoked.

I would travel some distance to avoid having to come back to this site!...Read less.

Although the park was lovely (could have been cleaner - bins overflowing and toilet block flooding) and the play area and space for ball games was amazing, we picked the site for the unlimited pitch sizes and the ability to park next to tent (which the website states) - the pitch sizes were however limited and we were crowded in on all sides with no ability to park having to abandon the car outside the toilet block - this made it difficult for packing away etc. Ideal site for smaller tents but not for large family ones. Unfortunately, the website could do with being up dated as it is massively misleading in that respect. Also the quiet after 11pm was not enforced - assuming no one was around to do it and we were surrounded by two different 40th birthday parties that went on until 2.00am the one night - difficult for kids sleeping and ourselves - although do appreciate people are allowed to celebrate!...Read less.

We've stayed at this site a couple of times before during October when it wasn't as busy and we really enjoyed ourselves. This time we stayed in June during the school holiday and it was jammed pack. The washrooms/toilets were maintained and clean to a good standard but the rubbish collection point went beyond a joke. It was piled so high bags and boxes just kep slipping off and falling in to the pathway. I couldn't access the Elson and waste water points without clearing loads of rubbish out of the way. Staff didn't do anything to manage this and it really was awful.

In addition, pitch 10 is next to the mains waste and ommitted disgusting smells 24/7 and many of the pitches, particularly for tents, aren't level. In the caravan we had to lower the front end of the van and chock the back legs. We also saw vans chocked at the front and low at the back.

Overall, we would go back during quieter periods but will definitely be staying away during any main holidays or events. We just don't feel the facilities and staff can manage when it's full.

The site is ideally located for great cycling and walking and the Seven Stars and Thatch pubs are nice....Read less.

The staff are all lovely and friendly, and the site itself is ok.

It is quite an expensive campsite, something justified by its apparently good facilities. However, you have to pay a lot extra for these, and they aren’t that great. It was very difficult to wash my baby, for example, in a shower without a bench next to it, or anywhere dry to put him and his clothes. Also, I had to put a pound in a machine across the room which started ticking down as soon as the coin was through the slot - before we had got undressed etc. Very tricky to put more money in too, when me and the baby were undressed.

Another disappointment was the lack of recycling facilities. Very unusual in this day and age! There was a colossal mound of rubbish piled up at the end of the bank holiday - a lot of which could have been recycled. Such a shame.

Top field was packed like sardines and some near the sewage pit which really smelled. Thank god we werent up there. Bottom field was thankfully much better and we enjoyed being near the park. Great for kids due to big field and park. However dogs are allowed on it and there was poo on the grass. We felt staff should have been monitoring that, and generally checking everything was ok in the field, but no one was.

When we rang to book staff were in a flap and unfriendly. When we arrived they had got our booking wrong and then were extremely rude about it. We were really shocked at how rude the man was. He was clearly very busy and stressed and we unfortunately had that taken out on us.

The toilet and shower facilities are very nice, but there was no toilet roll for a whole afternoon, evening and night one day, and were quite dirty as it was a bank holiday with hundreds of people sharing six toilets, which were only checked/cleaned once per day at 10am.

The price was 80 pounds for a bank holiday, which was the reason we booked - far cheaper than most places. So we were happy with that.

In a nutshell id say its a nice place but the staff need to be much friendlier, better organised and more attentive to the upkeep of the site especially at busy times....Read less.

We stayed for the late Bank Holiday along with A LOT of other people. This meant the campsite was at capacity and the facilities struggled at times with the number of users (only 3 showers available for each block) and the cleanliness of them. Bizarrely, the pitch layout also meant that you could be unlucky enough to have an 'inside' pitch which meant walking (and driving your car) through someone else's pitch to access the road. This was disappointing for us as I had arranged at the time of booking to be in the lower field but this didn't occur on our arrival. As there were 4 tents in our party we arranged them as required over our allocated pitches rather than sticking to the painted lines. Overall, we were just about satisfied with our stay but I would look to book elsewhere for a BH unless they restrict numbers somewhat....Read less.

We had a lovely experience at the campsite, non electric pitch for our tent was great, plenty of space. My wife and I needed a camp site at short notice for a couple of nights. This site was extremely busy with families, (half term), but as we did not require electric, we were able to find a quiet corner in the bottom field. This meant rather a trek to the loos, but we preferred that to the alternative.

The showers at £1 a time, we thought expensive, but the site fees were reasonable, and we could understand the reasons for doing it this way. Otherwise I think there would have been huge queues for the showers. The toilets perhaps needed a more regular inspection, but I understand that 2 staff members had left at short notice, causing a shortage of staff.

There were plenty of woods to explore with lots of long walks in the local area, there were lots of little pubs and parks to visit within a short walk that were of excellent value. The site itself had a decent play area which was enjoyed by many children of all ages. The site felt safe and secure. We stayed on a bank holiday weekend, with all pitches in use. Sadly, this meant that the site was severely over crowded, with no additional provision made for services such as bin collection / emptying.

Given the number of pitches that the site has been carved into, multiple issues are directly and indirectly caused by over crowding.

Expect long queues for the toilet, showers & washing up sink.

In numbers:

- Circa 80 pitches (200+ people)

- 2 washing up sinks

- 3 male wc's

- 3 showers (pay per use)

The site is on steep incline, with many pitches undulating on multiple planes. Many would consider a significant proportion of the available pitches to be on such an incline as to render them unusable. The pitch map on the web site is not an accurate reflection of the site.

There is no direct access to a number of pitches, meaning access is only possible via one or more other pitches. Aside from the increased fire risk, this is not an acceptable practice.

Parking at the site is also severely restricted, when coupled with the over crowding, lack of direct access to pitches, and site incline, this issue becomes a serious risk to health and safety. Access for emergency vehicles could very easily become compromised. Given that there is no gap at all between pitches, the fire risk and emergency vehicle access concerns dictate urgent attention is paid to the pitch layout.

When we stayed, the toilet block wasn't cleaned for over 30 hours. This would not have been a major issue, if not for the severe over crowding. The over crowding is also evidenced with the bins, which were free flowing across the road.

My friends rented the lodges with their families, while a couple of us stayed in tents just down the hill. We were all able to hang out together in the lightly wooded lodge area, which has a fire pit, barbecue and hot tub. It was a lovely spot to relax and play. There are pretty walks to be had in the woods and the nearby Butterley Railway was interesting, quaint and loved by the children. (Two-for-one for Riddings guests.) The camp site was busy, it being May bank holiday weekend, and a bit noisy at night, but otherwise we had a delightful stay. It was definitely having the lodges to ourselves that made it, and I would highly recommend this strategy for a multi-family stay. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful....Read less.

I was pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness of the site and washrooms/toilets we lovely and clean and seemed pretty new in condition? There was no rubbish around the site which is great! But..I don’t know whether it’s bevause of it being a peak time or be it penny pinching but the camp site was a shambles of organisation with regards to setup of camping. We were four deep in a row meaning that the two in the middle either couldn’t park their car with their tent or caravan or those with camper vans could not get out. This to me is a fire hazard and very impractical for the visitors to the site.

The kids play area was abit lacking in things to do all be it very clean and well maintained.

There is no on site shop for essentials like milk bread etc (not that we are aware of anyway)

This is a lovely site but I would not return in a peak time due to layout....Read less.

We stayed on an unfortunately very wet weekend. Not unusual for April... however. Due to the site being so sloped, it very quickly became an utter boggy mess. We witnessed a trailer tent and 4x4 getting stuck where we helped push them out because the campsite have no towing facilities (I found this really unusual considering the sloped site). Many other vehicles including one in our own party also got stuck and were towed out by others. Personally, I was in a tent. I was located on a pitch at the bottom of the hill and was unable to drive my car to it due to the mud. This meant I had to park my trailer and car at the top of the him and walk everything down to the pitch when loading and unloading. In my opinion those particular pitches have not been given and consideration at all for rainy conditions. Whilst the weather cannot be helped, towing facilities and improved pitch access would have made a huge difference to my stay. I’m sad to say that despite the excellent toilet block, kids playground and good location of the site, I would never stay there again....Read less.

We have just returned after a 3 night stay, booked on a super pitch. We paid for an awning but the pitch was much narrower than other 'super pitches' and was like a mud bath so we couldn't put 1 up. When asking whether we could be refunded the price for the awning, we were informed the owner had said "no" which was disappointing. Our pitch was supposed to be a 16Amp pitch, but when we investigated due to the electrics constantly tripping out, we established it was only a 10Amp pitch. Most annoying as we couldn't boil the kettle all weekend, and had to keep turning the heating off to even put the microwave on, not great when caravanning in December! The other super pitchs were 16A, so why ours wasn't who knows.

Free wifi was good, but the electrics were awful and need sorting. Why should we have been expected to pay for a 16Amp pitch as advertised on their website) but it was only 10A. The roads were quite mucky too, so it was impossible to keep shoes clean.

It was a shame as this could be a nice site, but issues above need to be ironed out....Read less.

Great place, however was supposed to check in at 11.30am, didn't get on our pitch till 2pm due to someone still packing away as he had been there several months. The plus side we did get to use the hot tub for an hour, the down side we wanted to go walking for the day, hence booking a park with an early check in!! But that didn't happen with us not getting on our pitch till 2pm, it's gets dark at 4pm so it was to late. Then in the night the electric kept cutting out, so a bad night sleep...... We stayed at Ridding Wood on our way back towards London from a week up in the scottish highlands. We arrived later than the reception hours, but called in advance and the person we spoke to was very helpful giving us the code for the gate and directing us to their website to make the booking online. Very simple. When we arrived it was dark but we could see that there is a lovely view from the campsite over the neighbouring town. The facilities were clean and tidy and the pitches are well spaced so we didn't feel packed in. We didn't explore the surrounding area in detail, the towns adjacent felt a bit uninspiring, but the proximity to matlock and the derbyshire dales would make this a decent base for exploring slightly further afield....Read less.

I recently stayed at the park with my wife and our 2 year old grand son. The amenities were very clean and well kept. The pitch was ok however we did have to put our awning on the grass as the actual pitch was quite small so anyone else visiting i would recommend taking a plastic sheet to put under any awning carpet . The electric kept tripping at the post where it was plugged in which was a bit annoying and not the van i believe as we have not experienced this before on other parks but that said it was not a major issue and should not detract from what was an enjoyable stay which we all enjoyed. The park was ok and my grandson enjoyed the activities on it. The staff at the campsite helped us get set up when we arrived and helped us with an issue we had which was outwith anything to do with the campsite or the rally, which was very kind of them.

Considering the campsite does get very busy it only had 2 showers for ladies & 2 for men!!! ( Not enough). Three of the toilets in the ladies were out of order, hairdryers out of order, one of the hand soap dispensers was empty, both was empty in the men's. There was a mop & bucket to wipe the cubicle once finished showering, but the mop was dirty & dirty water in the bucket.( I suggest the mop gets changed through the day & to keep disinfectant water in the bucket, also to be changed throughout the day!!) We stayed for a 3 night camping experience with a large group of friends. Loved the stay and weather was fantastic that weekend! Easy to book and staff friendly on arrival. Campsite felt safe. Disappointed by the up hill hike to the toilet block from the tent no electric hook up spot...... which I have to be honest when desperate I did drive a few times, which is not always safe when kids are enjoying themselves! I did not shower but friends that did were disappointmented with the cleanliness of the showers, but the site was v busy that weekend! Some toilets did become out of order too, but we discovered that was due to inconsiderate campers flushing wild down the toilets! We went walking to condor castle on one of the days, which was fab! Stopping off at the thack for a pint.... although was disappointed to find (we were starving) that food was not served all day and they had run out of made up cobs (the staff commented that they had been busy and a lot of people had visited the pub from the site) so it might be worth considering that when advertising a pub that the times for food are also displayed! However this campsite was in lovely surrounding woods tht the kids loved, and found a rope swing to entertain themselves! With better toilets and maybe toilets in lower field this site would be fabulous....Read less.

Upon arriving, checking in and setting up was very easy however I was questioned about my booking. Having emailed back and forth and been on the phone, I was assured that my booking for the correct amount of people. however, despite coming with one less person we were stopped and questioned about the booking as they did not believe I had paid for us all. Having shown them my invoice and conversation with Tracey it appeared that they still did not believe me and was told to "leave it with them" - overall, not appearing to want to believe me.

We did pay for an electrical site but we chose not to use one as we decided to pitch up at the far end just to ensure we would not disturb the surrounding families. This is a benefit of the site as it is large enough to have your own space.

Very impressed with the wash facilities. They were always very clean and warm.

One thing we were disappointed by was the lack of open pubs or places to eat. We wanted to be able to go out on walks and find a place to eat and have a Drink. Having seen a poster for a local pub in the wash room with a menu we were excited to check it out. Once arriving we find that the kitchen is only open three days a week so we set out to find somewhere else. We visited 6 other pubs but found that they were either closed (despite some of them saying they were open online) and some that were open and said outside that they served food didnt actually once you went in and asked for a menu. This is not the fault of the campsite at all, however next time we would not book again here due to the lack of open, local places to eat which are in walking distance.

Every other pitch had a bench table but you had to get there early to be able to get one!! The toilets and showers (ladies) weren't to bad to start off with, though there was only 2 showers and was told by my partner that there was 2 showers in the men's block but 1 was out of order (and was for the whole 3 days we were there). On the Friday evening I went to wash up and there was only 2 washing up sinks and 1 was blocked. The on-site warden was informed but couldn't unblock it as he didn't have any tools!! One of the campers managed to unblock it. On the Saturday afternoon 4 out of the 8 ladies toilets were blocked and they were down to 1 shower as well. Lucky for the wardens there was a camper that managed to unblock the toilets as well. The park needs some improving , which they said they are doing in the winter so would go back next year for a weekend to see if it's improved....Read less.

have visited the site a couple of times before. second visit we lost our pitch to someone while out exploring the area in our camper van. got moved to another pitch, but no wi fi there.

this visit the camping area of the site was packed and noisy, too many people crammed into one area and not enough shower facilities for everyone. after the weekend the site calmed down and emptied quite a bit and was much more comfortable.

our pitch was close to the path that led to the showers/wash up area etc. this path was constantly used by children hurtling down it on scooters and bikes which was dangerous as they skidded into the path of oncoming traffic and also were ending up on top of parked vehicles and caravans

on our last night new neighbours arrived and did not set up caravan until very late and were still noisily setting up airbeds at 1.30am. could not sleep that night....Read less.

Nice campsite not too far away from where we live. Very friendly staff - accommodated us at short notice on a Bank Holiday weekend. Short walk to the village where there are two nice pubs.

The campsite was over booked by the previous site wardens and the new wardens were left to pick up the pieces. There was no system to the allocation of pitches however as we had children we were able to pitch in front of the park. People were camping on top of each other. The ladies toilets blocked and my brother in law kindly unblocked them had he not there would have only been 1 shower and three toilets out of action.

The toilet and shower facilities need to be improved and a better system for allocation of pitches which need to be marked out. Not sure if we would visit again as there are better campsite however the surrounding area was very nice. We visited Matlock falls and Buxton and visited the steam railway at butterly. The camp wardens were very helpful and acted quickly to try and unblock the toilets....Read less.

Upon arriving late on the Friday evening we found the site very over booked. However, following discussion with the staff we were able to find a more suitable pitch for both ourselves and our friends for the weekend. Unfortunately it would appear the previous owners had over booked the site and the new owners were trying very hard to honour all customer bookings, this meant that many tents were very close together. It also meant that the one shower block for the whole site, although very clean, was always very busy and the men only had one working shower. Having said that we had a very enjoyable weekend at Riddings Wood (the weather certainly helped) and the children loved the play park. As we were with friends we were happy to be pitched close to each other but I'm not sure we would have felt the same if we hadn't known the people we were pitched next to....Read less.

We enjoyed our stay at Riddings Wood. The grounds were very tidy and organised, and the kids park facility was great! The only criticism I would have is that the shower and toilet facilities were not maintained enough. Every time me and my husband went in, they were dirty. Used sanitary pads on the floor in the combined toilet & shower area (seriously... a woman had put it next to the bin, not inside the bin!! Some women are just an embarrassment!), a mop bucket left full of dirty water, toilet blocked with a pile of wet dirty tissue paper on the floor next to the toilet. I couldn't understand why they were in this state early in the morning, when 2 members of park staff were just outside, monitoring people putting their waste in the bins?! Why not close the shower block for 10 mins to give it a quick clean? I understand it's difficult to continuously maintain when the campsite is in its busiest period, and unfortunately some people just have no respect for your facilities which is a great shame. There was also a serious issue with the drains... you could literally taste the smell, and it wasn't even particularly hot when we stayed. I think they just need a good clean. Overall though, I would consider staying here again....Read less.
