I will join the advantage club and use the site more often if offers are available not just 24 hours before the date.

This may tempt me away from Park Coppice & Sykeside

The site although big has secluded parts. The facilities are good.

It is central to visit most parts of the Lake District, some of which are in walking distance or on a bus route.

This is the second time at Skelwith Fold on a Premium pitch with our tourer. After setting up this time, our water pump would not work. With the help of a fantastic warden (whose name I cannot remember), he helped fix the problem with a cost of £1.50 for 3 fuses.

The site is very well kept and, the Premium pitches do give you, not only, a Super pitch with aerial hook up with water in and out, but access to a close-by under-floor heated toilet block. During a busy half term week we had no trouble getting showers etc....

The location is fab! You have short walks to local pubs such as the Drunken Duck and Talbot Inn, or further afield to Elterwater, Coniston and obviously Ambleside, all with good pubs!

Skelwith Fold is a huge site but, doesn't seem busy due to a large number of statics and the space around everything.

The reception staff are nice and polite, the shop was obviously running it's stock down due to upcoming close of season although, we did manage to get most things we needed on a day to day basis.

We will return to this relaxing and well managed site in fantastic surroundings....Read less.

I would like to see a computer booking system installed that allows the request/booking of a 'specific' plot number. This seems to be a very standard feature at the majority of private sites and one that would be more than welcomed by guests at Skelwith.

Having stayed many times now, feel the 'access code' for the toilets/shower block is simple but massive improvement over the old 'two card' per pitch system.

I recommend that if the present system remains you make it policy that guests are only issued with their 'access code' after they have informed you of which pitch they have chosen. This would ensure your records are updated more swiftly following arrival & staff/wardens wouldn't have to chase people for such detail.

Another wonderful stay this October Skelwith, thank you..... see you next Easter for the first of our two 2017 visits....Read less.

Our stay was from Monday until Friday during the last week of October 2016. I have been coming to the Lake District for almost 50 years (since I was born) but this was the first time I have ever been to Skelwith Fold caravan park. My family (2 adults, 1 nine year old boy) and I were very impressed with the site - it is very peaceful and everyone we spoke to (staff and other campers) were very friendly. The facilities were immaculate and the shop must rank as one of the biggest I have seen on a site. The only down side (which is not the of the sites doing) is that access from Clappersgate to the site (1 mile) can be a bit tight as the road is narrow in places - On leaving we me a coach coming the other way and passed each other with only inches to spare. This said we will definitely be coming back!!!!

Electricity is good, lot of amps, tv channels selection is a bit limited. Only complaint is the wi-fi which is expensive and does not provide good coverage into our caravan. This really does need to be improved.

laundry, shop, and showers are great. Site is quiet and peaceful even when full at half term.

We camped under a tree this tie. Pretty but it make noises on the van roof and amplified the rain sound by forming big droplet. Perhaps these should be cut back.

We had service pitch with picnic table. The hard standing was the worst we have been on, the pegs just popped out, we bought more from the shop but they were the same. Others we spoke to also had issues. There was also not one light in out area, however the others did have. There was a fantastic drying room which was locked from 9pm to 9am. Unfortunately it was not always unlocked until later which resulted in walkers having to wait to get and about.

The facilities were spotless. The shower cubicles were the most spacious I have ever seen. Showers were push button but lovely and hot. There were no wash basin cubicles, but I would rather have the large shower cubicles. The shop sold a variety of things and well stocked.

Overall a nice site, but for the price it needs to be right, and the hard standing was definitely not. If I wasn't using an awning I would possibly return, but with one, definitely not....Read less.

Have been going to Skelwith Fold for about thirty years now and must be one of the best sites in the Lakes for facilities and ease of access to local area. You could park up at the site for a week and walk out to do whatever without using your vehicle. Keep a lookout for the wildlife, rabbits, deer, owls, jays etc. Pleasant to walk around the site in the evening especially around the tarn

Great spot to take your children. When ours were little they'd play in the woods all day.

It was quiet on this visit, end Sept, but can get busy at peak times. Never the less facilities like toilets/showers don't get too busy.

It's can be expensive, especially at peak season, but if you're in their advantage club it becomes reasonable out of peak season. I suppose they can charge their prices because of where they are in the Lakes. Still don't know why they charge extra for awnings as all pitches are hard standing so there's no maintenance of grass. Also they've started charging for dogs. Again why? If it's because of the extra maintenance costs then surely humans require more.

Despite thee gripes we will still go. I would defy anybody to find a more beautiful spot....Read less.

We stayed at this site for three nights and can only say what a fantastic site it is in a great location.

Facilities on the site are excellent from the amenity blocks to the very well stocked onsite shop, which stocked all the essentials, so no need to go off site if you didn't want to.

There are a couple of dog friendly pubs within walking distance which we walked to for a drink, the Talbot bar and the Drunken duck. The Talbot was a decent pub which served traditional pub food and the Drunken duck was a bit more upmarket on the food front. Ambleside is a 40 minute walk or a bus ride from the entrance of the site, we never went into Ambleside on this visit as we always usually stay there, so have been to most of the shops, restaurants and pubs, which there are plenty of. One of our favourites there is Lucy 4's, a tapas sort of restaurant but there are others which are also very nice.

We visited in our motorhome and booked a premium pitch which was well worth the extra money, especially as the weather was so good. This came with a drinking water tap, waste water drain, picnic table and awning space, it was a very good sized pitch. All in all a great site in a lovely location, very friendly and helpful staff.

We will definitely visit again....Read less.

The site was in a beautiful location and very clean. The only comments I would make are as follows:

1. Rotary lines are not allowed on the site. I am struggling to understand why. This is the first site I have been on where this rule applies. I appreciate there where facilities to dry clothing but what is the problem with a rotary line. Mine was placed at the back of the caravan and we were left a note asking us to take it down.

2. The toilet and shower blocked were cleaned everyday which I had no problem with. Having said that, the time the block was cleaned changed each day. Again on all other sites I have stayed on, the toilets were cleaned at the same time every day so you knew what time to avoid.

3. There is a speed restriction on site which I completely agree with for the safety of all visitors. However the staff appeared in their buggies to exceed the speed limit but were quick to pull you up if you speeded.

4. Everyday the staff would drive around the site on more than one occasion watching to make sure you were not breaking rules. To me, the reason why you have a holiday is to relax but you felt you were being watched all the time....Read less.

Years ago, when the boys (and us!!) were young, we were avid campers with our trailer tent. Having not done anything like this for years, we decided to hire a motorhome. We went for a premium hardstanding pitch with electric, water and TV hook up - days of 'roughing it' long gone!! If Skelwith Fold is anything to go by, boy, have caravan sites moved on!! Numerous shower blocks serving various parts of the estate meant the one adjacent to us was hardly busy at any time. (I know it was mid Sept. but during our stay the 'site full' notices went up!). Wonderfully warm, immaculately cleantoilet block with easy to use large showers, free hairdryer - great! The shop was well stocked with food etc. (and drink!) and, expecting the usual 'inflation' incredibly impressed with what were really 'normal' prices! You had to be quick to get the fresh baked bread, pain au chocolat or croissant though - you could order if you were so inclined - they were all lovely! The estate was beautifully tended and a pleasure to walk around with lots of really nice walks if you didn't want to stray far. Although we didn't use it (tempted to have a swing though!) the childrens play area looked well equipped and super and there was a very nice and large recreation area (it had to be a reasonable size because that's where the air ambulance lands if neccessary!!). An absolutely super site with lovely people from start to finish! Go there, you won't be dissappointed....Read less.

This was a lovely easy place to take our little Eriba for its first weekend out. The in-park roads were in excellent condition, the hard standings were flat and clear, and when we couldn't unhitch the van, a lovely staff member going round in a golf buggy helped us out. The park does make it very clear what you should and shouldn't do, which we liked. There are a lot of statics (but attractively laid out) and the tourers are in their own section. The wash rooms were amazing, accessed by code and hardly ever being used by anyone else. The park has extensive grounds and we had some great walks around the neighbouring country roads, through to Hawkeshead. The park is well placed near Ambleside and at the head of the Langdale Valley - prime Lake district territory. One thing we hadn't anticipated was that our dogs wouldn't have ready access to grass, as the hardstandings are gravel. Their paws found it a bit uncomfortable. Some of the other spots would have had easier access to grass, but ours felt a bit like a beautiful, wellmaintained parking lot. BUt we had a good time and would return....Read less.

From booking to leaving we were very impressed with the ease and simplicity with all of the services provided.

The site is easy to access, checking-in was professional, friendly and easy. The location is excellent for ease of access to the popular areas of The Lake District and many activities and sights and restaurants.

We stayed on a premium pitch which was a good size and aside from the water and electricity, came complete with a substantial picnic table and plenty of room for the car and our own table/ loungers.

The location of the site is simply stunning and although wooded, is very well maintained and managed. The owl gently hooting during the night-time was a great touch ( just joking- but he was a delightful added bonus).

The ambience when we stayed was quiet, relaxed and friendly, with many walkers and out-doorsy caravanners - many caravans had awnings and I'm sure that the 'drying room' was beneficial.

The shop/reception is well stocked with quality items and useful information - lovely fresh baked bread! The library is a lovely idea and the launderette is clean, simple to use and a useful addition. The washrooms are worth a special mention because I rarely used our caravan facilities during our stay - a first! They are spacious, clean, well managed and gloriously warm ( underfloor heating?) when we stayed in early September.

We would highly recommend Skelwith Fold and we will head straight back next time we visit the Lakes....Read less.

Very friendly ground staff. Cleanliness of toilet blocks was outstanding as was the standard of the main block - the best I have encountered by far. The pitch felt a little like a car park as it was entirely hard-standing but this was offset by the lack of mud when it rained. Very difficult to get tent pegs in but luckily found the site had a heavy duty mallet that helped with this would have been useful to have been told of this when checking in rather than after I'd struggled for an hour. Been looking at Skelwith Fold for a few years but never got to go, so we booked up for our August holiday. The site is very well kept lovely helpful staff, although we don't use the facilities they were immaculate. We stayed on a fully serviced pitch witch was a bit small for our twin wheeler but we picked it for the sun on an afternoon. There is a nice walk out of the back of the site to a couple of pubs one about a mile then maybe a half mile walk along a small lake, perfect for bikes we went to Wray Castle then onto Hawkeshead without even going on the road. After a long drive down from Scotland where we spent the first part of our holiday it was lovely to receive a warm welcome by the staff who were very friendly.

We chose the site for its location because we were attending a wedding in the area. It is larger a more expensive site than we would normally choose but the site is very clean and tidy and the facilities are good. In a break in the weather we went for a lovely walk with our dog from the site.

We have been to stay at Skelwith twice, for a week at a time. 1st was 2 years ago and the 2nd was a week ago. We love this site. We went with our touring caravan and asked to be on the pitches near to the park called Coppice. Its a row of pitches where you can see the park and all weather football pitch and it has a lovely view off the woods behind the caravan and infront. The showers and toilets are a little walk away from these pitches up a hill but it's not too much of a problem. Both the toilet blocks, older and newer are immaculately clean and good to use. The onsite shop has just about everything you need and isn't overpriced. All the staff are friendly and helpful. Always going around checking and keeping everywhere clean and tidy. Would highly recommend this site. Only down side is there is zero tv signal and my iPhone couldn't pick up any wifi sugnal at all. But it was nice to actually be offline for a week....Read less.

We do most of our caravanning now on Camping and Caravanning or Caravan Club sites. Skelwith is more expensive than most sites we stay at. Compared to club sites, the pitches at Skelwith are not as good as club site pitches. The pitch we used sloped significantly from front to back and from left to right as seen from the front of the pitch. We had to raise our right side wheel about 4 inches to level side to side. We had to borrow 4 half breeze blocks (for which we are exceedingly grateful) to put under our step to access our van. I had to find large stones to put under the wooden blocks to allow our rear steadies to be reach a "ground level" on which they were effective. We have stayed here 2 years ago and was our first choice of site once we bought a caravan. I stayed here on my own with 3 children and the staff and facilities are amazing. The family room made life so much easier at bath time and excellent walks from the site and frequent buses. I cannot rate this site highly enough. It didn't get a 5 for ease of access purely because the entrance is on a sharp bench so go steady but really well signposted and a 4 as there are bikes to hire/playground/walks but no entertainment as such so couldn't get a 5 but we actually prefer that there is no evening entertainment. We used Skelwith Fold as a base for a walking holiday. We stayed in a touring caravan we asked at reception on arriving if we could have a pitch with good TV reception, as all the expensive sites were booked up we were directed to a place where we might get good reception… we didn’t! But it did not spoil our trip but my wife made me watch old boring black and white episodes of the Forsythe Saga for which I shall never forgive Skelwith Fold.

The pitch was a good size and it was not too busy. We asked if we could stay longer on the last day which the reception staff agreed to without any extra charge! Which we were pleased about.

The toilet block was very very clean and the showers a delight!

We would have liked to have used the bus to go into Ambleside but found the walk to the bus stop too far.

On two of the days we were there there were quite bad traffic problems going into Ambleside, we were not sure if this was a regular problem or as a result of some road works.

We did some walking from the campsite, we walked to Cathedral Cavern and back a delightful walk full of beautiful views it was about 8 miles and we really enjoyed that day. Another day we walked to Loughrigg and found it another strenuous walk (for us) but it made a good break from watching the Forsythe Saga.

Surprised that there is not more on the site like a café… at Reception they had an events board but it was empty whenever we went passed!...Read less.

I booked a hideaway for my partners birthday based on the fact it was child free, secluded and only 4 hideaways meaning maximum of 6 other people around us. Unfortunately this was not the situation we found ourselves in. Firstly the hideaway itself was immaculate, reception staff and other park staff we encountered very friendly indeed and we were very impressed to begin with. However, after a couple of hours we realised it was not as secluded as the website had lead us to believe and when the guests for two of the properties arrived it was apparent that they were part of a much much larger group and as such often there were 6 or 7 people up and down in a mini van including children. The staff were aware of this and on the first evening came and said the movement up and down would soon stop but it didn't as they used the facilities in the hideaway to cook for whole party. On the morning they departed they left very early and as such we were disturbed in fact when the leady came to clean she commented on this and said I bet you were disturbed and when I said yes she said we thought you would be. I thought at this point we would at the least receive an apology but we did not. I reported this again on departure and staff said that they would make the management aware and though I would at least receive an email on returning home but over a week later still nothing. Whilst I accept this kind of thing can happen it is the responsibility of the site manager to ensure other guests are not disadvantaged and their break spoilt and at the very least accept this responsibility and apologise. It is for this reason that we are unlikely to return or recommend the site to others as a romantic hideaway it was not....Read less.

I came on my own with a touring caravan. The site itself was immaculate and very well run. The toilet block was spotless, the only reason I have marked it down was because of the toilet roll dispensers, which seem daft, but they didn't roll easily! I had a quiet pitch and they were all very well marked. The pitch where I was is not very deep so it took quite a bit of manoeuvring to set it up right. The surrounding area is beautiful and Ambleside has plenty to keep you busy. One area which was frustrating was the new key pad access. We had extended our stay by one day several weeks before the holiday, however on the last day we were unable to access the toilet block as it would not accept our code. We need to leave early and this obviously delayed our departure. We also couldnt raise the duty warden for help.

Also our code would not open the barrier at the back of the site (Bog Lane), which was equally frustrating as our drives frequently left in that direction....Read less.

Our family have stayed at Skelwith Fold caravan park for 4 years now and we love it. The facilities are of a really good standard. The showes and toilets are spacious and clean, there is a great wee laundry drying area and a super library which can come in handy. My daughter loves the play park and I think the shop is the best one I have seen on a site. The chip van is a nice treat on the Friday night. It's a pretty well looked after site and is handy for all local attractions. The staff are helpful and friendly. Skelwith Fold is set in an amazing landscape with acres of woods and pathways to explore right outside your caravan. Add to that its central location in the beautiful Lake District and it's very hard to fault.

The facilities are very good with immaculately Clean toilets and showers and a good shop providing the basics.

Despite being a large site, you don't get any sense of overcrowding and most pitches are quite intimate and generally quiet.

The only fault I can find, which isn't any fault of the site, is the exit onto the main road at clappersgate which is particularly steep. If you have to stop at the junction to give way to vehicles on the main road and you are towing a caravan, you will struggle to pull out without the smell of a burning clutch.

That said, this is my only concern about this site and it is nowhere near enough to stop me coming back year after year, I will just have to buy a bigger car!!

I would recommend this site to anyone , it is simply beautiful....Read less.

We had a great stay at Skelwith Fold recently. From the moment we arrived we were greeted with a friendly welcome, everything was explained to us and booking was ready and took no time at all to check in.All facilities are first class, bins & water nearby and toilets/wash rooms were immaculate, plenty of room in showers, separate cubicles if you just want to freshen up and the dish washing wash good with plenty of hot water. In the other toilet block there is a drying room for wet towels/clothes boots etc. and laundry facilities which i didn't need to use.

This site is like 5 star luxury compared to some sites I've been to. The entrance to the park is very impressive with a long drive and barrier access. The security is apparent on entering the gate with CCTV cameras. The reception area was very clean with a well stocked shop. Staff were very polite and helpful at all times. Love that you can pick your own pitch. The site itself is very clean with spacious pitches and facilities (water and waste points) close by. The toilet/shower blocks are underfloor heated making them very comfortable to use - they were spotlessly clean and with coded access doors. There are many walks from the site to various locations in the surrounding area - maps can be purchased from the park shop. A five minute drive or 30 minute walk can have you in Ambleside with lots of excellent shops, bars and restaurants - there is also a bus from the park gate. There are many other places nearby to be explored which makes this caravan park an excellent base. We definitely plan on a return visit very soon....Read less.

We have been visiting Skelwith for a few decades and always enjoy our visits. There has been a gradual but noticeable improvement in facilities and quality of the site and this is much appreciated. There are, however, two issues which intrigue me:

1. Why is it necessary to restrict access (and charge) for use of the back entrance out of the site? This causes me some inconvenience and I have always found this an imposition that you should choose to charge us for the privilege of leaving from a different exit. It is a very large site and two exits should not be exceptional.

2. All of the pitches are now clearly marked out and this is definitely for the better. Why is it appropriate to charge extra for an awning when this simply occupies the pitch space we have already paid for? This always seems to me to be a slightly underhand way of maximising profits (and, yes, you could argue that an awning takes up more space - but so does a large twin axle v a small unit - but you don't differentiate in your pricing there!)...Read less.

Although the site road from the main road to the site itself is a lovely walk, it is up hill and quite a long walk for older members or people with mobility problems. On the plus side there is a bus stop right outside the approach road with buses to Ambleside and to Coniston the other way. For older people with bus passes the travel is free. The site was easily found by following directions from the main road from Ambleside to Coniston. The approaching road is a bit narrow but still manageable with a tourer. When we arrived, we received a warm welcome and useful information about the site. The site is well kept and all facilities are kept clean, we saw park wardens n golf buggies checking the site regularly and even sweeping the tarmac where gravel from the hard standing had gone onto the road(good for kids on scooters and walking in bear feet).

The play area was a short walk away which meant we couldn't see our daughter from the caravan but there were spaces available near the play area if we wanted to locate there. The play area had good choice of equipment but in my opinion missed a larger flat area where families could play.

The park is secured with barriers and there is a key code for the wash facilities, the site is located in idyllic, quiet countryside and we felt safe, secure and relaxed while we were there. There are really good facilities and entertainment near by in Ambleside, Skelwith Bridge, Coniston and Grasmere. We really enjoyed the cake at the café and the steak and ale pie at the pub in Skelwith Bridge, the pub is also dog friendly and even has a dog menu. The site is situated in beautiful woodland and a short walk out of the site gives amazing views of the Lake district....Read less.

The warden asked us to take out awning down as it was on the wrong side even though we had 5m between the next pitch and wouldn't even let us move the van over. I had checked with reception in the morning and they had said it was ok and wasn't told to take the awning down until after my friends had arrived and had a drink so they had nowhere to sleep and there were no lodges available so we were left with nowhere for them to sleep and there was no sense from the warden even though we had checked with the reception so wasn't our fault. I have visited Skelwith Fold for over 40 years, & it is still special to me.

The site has been improved & extended over many years, but still retains much of the original features which made it such a magic place in the 1970s

You will not find more efficient, dedicated, & friendly staff anywhere.

The only downside is cost. Although not overly expensive, it does not compare well to excellent Caravan Club Sites such as Park Coppice at Coniston.

The benefits of being a member of their Advantage Club have been devalued & nightly charges applied to canopies. Discount on the excellent "store & "stay where you can leave you caravan on pitch in low season between weekends have gone. Awnings are charges for, even though they occupy the same pitch size, so why do you have to pay to use your own awning on your own hired pitch?

Wifi is available but charged for. Most hotels, shopping centres, & even buses on Tyneside, provide free wifi. Maybe it is time to drop the charge

As a single visitor with a dog, the Caravan Club sites are half the cost.

However, if you are happy with price, you will love your stay at Skelwith Fold...Read less.

Can be a bit crowded at peak times with caravans etc quite close and some spots not much space to manoeuvre. Take you time to find a pitch that suits your unit size....Read less.
