I already knew the park was well looked after, but after staying it is the small things that really make the difference. Popping to the loos and seeing all the facilities have been thoroughly cleaned; the regular circulation of friendly staff keeping an eye on their property and yours; or drinking your coffee in the morning whilst looking at the fells.

The campsite has clear rules, but rather than being policed, these boundaries are thoughtfully implemented with the sophistication of good hotel. You also feel like you are living in a community, which is very lovely. The staff are helpful and are constantly on the go!

The two main facilities seem really maintained and thought through (their drying room has saved us many times). I also have noted over my visits that the shop seems to have improved and stocks lots of local goodies too.

A lovely place that's a idyllic home from home....Read less.

We stayed here for two nights and were very impressed with the standard of the site. Staff in reception were very pleasant and explained everything we needed to know. We were meeting friends in Ambleside and the young chap at reception gave us a bus time table showing us exactly which bus to take. Very handy as it stops at the end of park drive. We booked a premium pitch for our motor home plenty of space. Bathroom facilities were spotless as was the laundry and dish washing areas. We would stay here again...Read less.

We had a lovely stay at Skelwith. The facilities are excellent, great views and a lovely area with walks and cycle rides to do.It is a quiet and relaxing site and it's an easy cycle ride into Ambleside or Waterhead bay and there is a bus stop at the site entrance, although that is quite a walk from the touring pitches. Had an enjoyable stay for three nights at Skelwith Fold. Good clean facilities, but very different to the other campsite we had stayed in Ullswater.

As soon as you drive into Skelwith Fold, you are on camera and boy do they watch you. Our every move was being monitored. We parked our van facing the wrong way apparently. The warden was there in his buggy before we had even switched the engine off. Same again on another day, this time we had parked in the wrong area and there was the warden within moments. Makes you wonder if they have any other work to do.

Great campsite if you don't mind big brother or big warden watching you...Read less.

We have stayed here for many years and find the park to be of a high standard and very good value for money, especially if you join the advantage club which offers its members discounts and we all love a discount! The ample walks within its grounds are the best we have ever found. The woodlands, the flowers and plants and the overall set up is a delight and we are lucky enough to always spot a deer in the grounds. The cleanliness of the facilities are exceptional and can only be a credit to the staff. There is a library which is well stocked and tidy and a real bonus if you enjoy reading a good book whilst on holiday. The general set up of the touring pitches are somewhat a little structured and do not offer much privacy from your neighbours and some pitches can be a bit of a squeeze for the larger caravans if it is busy but all the same, they are flat, well drained and tidy and given the delightful surroundings this does not cause us a problem or too much concern...we would thoroughly recommend this site it and hope that it continues to keep such high standards....Read less.

The welcome you receive when you turn up as a complete stranger is wonderful you are made to feel like you are one of the regular patrons who have a private caravan there. The campsite is beautiful and although it is large you do not feel like you are in a crowded park with so much woodland and nature on your doorstep . We had a roe deer grazing beside our motorhome quite the thing . The only thing I would comment on is that the area we stayed in coppice is a bit of a walk to the toilet facilities and these ones could do with a bit of an update there is a modern block at the other tourer area which were modern and bright and warm . The older smaller block does need a revamp and possibly a move closer to the coppice tourer area it seems to be beside private static caravans who have no need of it ?? Just a thought but this is a wonderful site and the bus stop is at the end of the drive to take you to Ambleside or Coniston or Hawkshead which are all worth a visit. We didn't know what to expect and we were blown away with how beautiful the site is and how friendly the staff were lovely walks for your dog within the park....perfect....Read less.

Thankfully we had fantastic weather so we were able to fill our days very easily - would be a different story in wet weather as there is nothing to do on site, but you know this in advance so it's a risk you take. The site is very well maintained. My children came home from the play park/football pitch as they were told they had to by 9pm. We were told we weren't allowed to hang washing on a camping rotary airer - not sure why but no drama we did as we were told. Absolutely stonking site and beautiful peaceful location. However not for the faint hearted due to the occasional road narrowings if you have a caravan behind you.

On approach met a large camper van who wouldn’t move as obviously a new owner, eventually got past but with inches to spare. Leaving met an HGV that looked like it was coming to pick up a big mobile home. Fortunately unlike the camper van driver he was experienced and we got past with millimetres to spare. So apart from the ingress and egress it was beautiful. Best shower block facilities etc we have seen to date....Read less.

Rang ahead to inform of delays, good customer service and understanding staff, met on arrival by the warden who provided good helpful information. We chose to stay down in the Coppice area and liked the fact it was quieter than the other touring pitched. TV ariel with EHU was welcome and level pitches all positive, we liked that the Warden was prompt asking a guest to turn the music down! Minor downside was no brown or chemical waste areas or recycling bins in the Coppice area or within walking distance, the nearest toilet facilities were clean but basic but there are 2 other blocks which we didnt visit, so consider this if mobility is an issue. The on site shop was excellent , well equipt and friendly helpful staff and good walks from the site, we did a few inc walk 4, we will revisit but possibly stay at the top end....Read less.

It`s position in the Lake District National Park could not be better. Within two miles of Ambleside it`s a great walk along off road cycle/footpaths and conventional footpaths. There`s an hourly bus service from the site to Ambleside or Coniston. As a pensioner I can then travel the Lake district just about in it`s entirety for free with my pass. (from Ambleside).

The site itself is superb and it`s toilet/shower blocks immaculate. You feel safe and the pitches are as large as any others I have been on. I use the super pitches which have all utilities and TV hookup.

The gardens are superb and we saw deer on site on each of our visits.

It`s quite a walk to the entrance and bus stops from even the nearest pitches which can be difficult for the elderly or less mobile persons. It`s down hill from the site to the bus stops but a pretty strenuous up hill trek back to the pitches. Perhaps an odd bench or two would help as it`s a beautiful area in which to take a breather.

We enjoyed a launch trip on Windermere from Ambleside to the adventure centre at Brockhole, (free entry for launch passengers). The facilities there are not the cheapest but you can suss them out before booking. (advised). For Steam Buffs there is the steam railway from Lakeside out to Haverthwaite and you can book a through journey by launch which is good.

All in all then a cracking site to visit. We`ve been several times now and will certainly be going again.

We were recommend by friends to visit this site as we don't normally go to large parks with a lot of statics, but our friends were insistent.....and I'm so glad they were.

The statics are laid out beautifully in small cul-de-sacs with an abundance of trees and shrubs masking most of them from road, you almost feel like you’re walking through a park! The touring pitches are right at the top of the park and it's "pick your own spot"...they are tiered and mostly flat hardstanding with plenty of electric points...we used chocks with the motorhome but a caravan would be fine. The toilets and showers are, without a doubt, the best we've used...spacious and clean with under floor heating....the block is easily accessible without being an eyesore.

The walk into Ambleside is all on paths, so no dodging traffic....well, until you get to Ambleside!

The only negatives are the length of time it takes to walk from the main gate back to your van....20 minutes of upness!....beautiful, but still up!....and the other thing was the noise from what I assume is a quarry? next to the pitches....they started making noise from 9am till well past 5pm.....we were out most of the day, but still, you go away to enjoy the peace and quiet, not listen to excavation works.

However, I would still go back to this site and will definitely be recommending it to friends.... but next time I'll be booking a taxi back from Ambleside!

We are regular visitors.

Attended bonfire for 1st time (not been able to before because of work). It was brilliant! Well done, all involved.

Only 1 thing which I can find a little annoying is timing of toilet cleaning (I know it has to be done and there are other toilets) but 9.20am is, I think, right in middle of the busiest time, particularly if people are on holiday and having a lie in etc. Most other caravan parks, I have stayed in, clean around 11.30am. I do recognise that there are probably reasons why but it is my only criticism....Read less.

We came to the campsite as it was recommended by a neighbour. We were looking for something to do as a family for bonfire night with a view to taking our camper van so we came and stayed for one night, and bought tickets for the bonfire and firework display with food.

On arriving at the campsite we were immediately struck by the cleanliness and standard of the facilities. It is very well maintained and situated in a perfect location, near to areas of local interest and surrounded by woodland.

We reported to the reception which was within a well stocked shop, with everything you need, and with good quality produce. The staff were knowledgable, friendly, very helpful, and happy! We were given clear instructions on where to park our camper and directions to the shower facilities and also the recreation ground ready for the bonfire and fireworks, where there was a clear itinerary for the evening.

We bought some wine from the shop (and wasn’t ripped off which is unusual!), everything we looked at was priced reasonably.

The site is well signposted with plenty of toilets and showers, which are clean, well maintained and modern.

The bonfire and fireworks were great and clearly a lot of effort had been spent on this. The food available in the evening was of a high standard and there was a variety of drinks available, again reasonably priced but you were able to take your own drinks and food in if you wished.

Live music by the ragtag misfits was ok!

There were games for the kids, welly wanging, coconut shy and shoot and score football, which my two kids loved.

We had an amazing stay and will definitely return, one of the nicest campsites we have been on, made even better by the fantastic staff.

Thanks Skelwith Fold!...Read less.

We have taken our Touring Caravan to Skelwith Fold twice this year, and most definately will be going back next year. The site is situated just minutes from Ambleside with a bus stop outside if you want to leave your car. The road to the site is a little challenging in places when you’re towing an 8 meter long caravan, but that’s Lake District roads for you!!! The site itself is abundant with wildlife, immaculately kept and bigger than you think! Facilities are excellent (I am very fussy about site toilets/showers) but these are also spacious and immaculately kept. There’s a well stocked shop with everything you need and even a little library. They are the only facilities we have used but there are many more. Definately worth the trip....Read less.

lovely site set in a 'wood'. you access it along a wiggly road but room to pass lorries etc on it (not at speed!) . site has a long driveway through woods, and the entire site is on a hillside split up into cul-de-sacs with lots of trees separating areas. There are loads of statics and a couple of areas for tourers. These are hard standing and mostly flat, although some slope, but as you can choose your own pitch that shouldn't be a problem.

Due to the trees, you don't feel crammed in and the site is very spacious, but you don't get any views of the local stunning scenery . bus stop at the drive entrance, but be warned it's a long walk uphill to return to your caravan if you have tired little feet with you.

Toilet facilities were well organised and very clean, bonus of under floor heating.

Library room is fantastic ( heated too if you fancy having a read in there on a cold wet day. Even has a selection of children / teen books.

Playground is at the bottom of a hill, so whilst great ( even has a fake grass football pitch ) it gets very boggy and muddy in the rain as water collects there. even so, staff were out cleaning the equipment so it's clearly looked after.

No bar but plenty in Ambleside which is a couple of miles stroll away ( mostly on a footpath, not the road).

Staff are very friendly and have lots of local knowledge.

TV reception doesn't exist in some areas, neither does mobile phone coverage, but there is a phone on site, and computers in the library.

Shame it costs so much, even in October, or we would be back more often...Read less.

We love this site due to both its location, within easy reach of many of our favourite Lake District places and the ambience and beauty of the site itself. Just walking through the woods on site is an experience - we've seen red squirrels and deer and a short stroll out the back gate to Skelwith Fold hamlet leads to amazing views of the Langdales. Its a great place to stay with a dog to walk through the woods.

We love to leave the car behind and walk to places like Coniston, Elterwater, Little Langdale, Grasmere or climb Loughrigg Fell, often utilising the local bus service or taxis to get back.

This is my favourite Caravan Park so I hope it will remain accessible to tourers and not go over to just premium statics as some other sites have done.

The toilet blocks are kept very clean and importantly for the weather we often get - are kept lovely and warm!

A few more hooks to hang stuff in the washrooms and in the shower cubicles would be appreciated....Read less.

I recently stayed at Skelwith Fold with my husband and Mother in Law. The staff could not have been more helpful. My Mother in Law is disabled and we were given a pitch as close to the disabled bathroom facilities as could be. She said that the facilities were the best that she had encountered of all the sites she had been with us too. Indeed, all caravan sites should have a look at Skelwith Folds bathroom facilities and take a leaf out of their book. Large showers with plenty of hot water that did not turn off after 10 seconds. Underfloor heating kept the block lovely and warm and dried the shower floors. I would recommend though that if you wanted a TV signal to go for the premium pitch. We had no TV signal for the week and would have asked to change if we had not had the Mother in Law with us. I do think that the normal pitches should be given TV points as standard as the standard pitches are still not particularly cheap. I don't mind being cut off from emails but lack of a decent wifi that could be used on site to check weather forecasts and attractions to plan the next day was a major major niggle. I paid for few hours wifi but the signal was hideous so I was very relieved I hadn't bought a bigger bundle. Asking customers to pay for wifi nowadays is something few businesses do and considering the price of over £40 a night for site fees, is free wifi not something that Skelwith Fold could be offered to customers?

GET IT SORTED!!!

Stop saying you are planning to do it and just do it. In this day and age it is an essential, I had read other reviews about the wifi service and had hoped, that as mentioned in follow up to reviews, that this would be sorted before our holiday.

My husband and I hate going coffee/lunch with our family and then taking our phones straight out but on this holiday it was essential as we needed to check weather and attractions when we were out and about. Checking the internet is normal done when our children are in bed as we prefer to chat as a family over coffee or meals.

Would I consider going back? Only if the wifi was sorted....Read less.

We were very impressed with the quieteness of the park considering its size. The heated washroom & facilities were the best we've come across (especially the underfloor heating in the showers...bliss). The shop was really well stocked & reasonably priced too. Whilst the wooded areas of the site were beautiful, our standard pitch under an oak & pine tree was far from ideal with both cones & acorns pummelling down onto the roof of the caravan day & night. The woodland walks were spectacular & had we children with us, I'm sure they would have loved the childrens play area with tarzen slide amongst the facilities. The cost per night is a little pricey but we think worth it. Access to & from the site is tricky in places with narrow bridges & steep hills at junctions, but it is possible if timed well....Read less.

Our recent visit to Skelwith Fold caravan park we found that the site facilities were very good and the staff all friendly which dose help considering the extreme wet weather we were having. The only downside was the pitch size and the ground. We had booked a premium pitch as it is advertised as having extra room and a picnic table. The pitches are no larger in fact smaller than any site we have been on before ( been caravaning for last 15 years) , you have your van and awning the picnic table is only 2 foot from the side of the awning and is a slabbed area which infringes awning pegging out. The ground is solid rock under the gravel and rock pegs cannot go in easily or at all. Your car is then parked in front of the picnic table so gives you an idea of how small the pitches are. We were not the only unit having problems with the state of the ground, heard many hammers hitting pegs and getting no were....Read less.

We stayed in a hideaway for 3 nights, it was great, staff are very welcoming and showed us how everything worked. The hideaway itself is small but well contained and fully stocked with everything you might need including washing up liquid and sponge! During our stay we asked for extra pillows and they brought them up straight away, the staff are very helpful and attentive. We walked to the local Talbot pub which was a short walk through the back gate, highly recomend the food there, as the Steak and Ale pie was delicious! During our stay we explored all the towns around us, easily accessible via car. The added little extras such as a bottle of Proccesso and the BBQ were a nice touch and the wifi wasnt too bad at times (however only one of us could use it at once). Overall we had a great relaxing time and would highly recommend couples to go for a little peaceful break away. A few improvements would be extra bin bags in the hideaway (as we filled the bin!), ashtrays provied to stop litter, a bin near the BBQ area and extra pillows in the cupboard just in case!...Read less.

Site offers good play facilities and some wonderful walks to Elterwater, Loughrigg and also into Ambleside.

Overall very well kept with good facilities but there are a few quirks to be aware of:-

- site wifi is by satellite link so quite expensive, but effective if you are in reasonable range of the site masts. There is no 3G/4g, and sometimes had no service on phone, though texts seemed to get through. TV signal ok - got about 35 freeveiw stations

- glass recycling is only at the site entrance, which is at least half a mile or more from the top part of the site we were staying on

- shower blocks are finished to a very high standard but have only 3 toilets and 3 showers so not great when busy

- pitches well spaced and marked, but some may be a little short for longer outfits...Read less.

We have recently purchased a caravan and booked this site on the recommendation of friends.

The pitch sizes are good, although a little bit close to each other, however there is more than enough room for an awning and car parking.

The location is great with our 2 dogs for local walks.

We walked from the site to Ambleside over Clappersgate, had a few drinks and a meal before returning on the bus.

The bus stops right outside the site.

We have already booked for another weekend towards the end of September on one of the larger premium pitch sizes....Read less.

After just spending 4 nights here not happy at all. Neighbours on right very noisy in and out if car, slamming the doors, slamming the boot. On the left first couple no problems very nice. Second ones came, a family. Firstly, over hanging onto our pitch and secondly one of kids decided to throw a stone at a tree of which it hit our van. No respect from either side for fellow campers.

Toilet and laundry facilities spotless. Although they say bus stop outside entrance to site what they don't tell you is it is 15 minute walk from there to reception.

The staff are very friendly and the shop stocked well.

We were very pleasantly surprised with our stay here; in a small tourer, we stayed at the very top near the wash facilities. I liked the idea you could choose your own pitch rather than being allocated. I'd read some reviews about pitches being cramped together - can't say I really noticed this. There is no separation fences/hedges etc between pitches and they are all on hard standing ground (no grass options), but we very comfortably had the caravan + awning + car alongside and this was not squeezed in. Admittedly, a few pitches further back did look a little closer, these possibly more for camper vans?, but they still looked ok. Toilet facilities very good (the block by us anyway, the other one round the other side nowhere near as new). Possible only criticism was there was only 3 showers & 3 toilets in the block, although I never needed to wait for the shower (1st week August), and floor is heated in showers!!! It's a large site, mostly of statics, but very well laid out and set in large woodlands area. Brilliant for walks, long or short, especially because we had a dog, all straight from the site. The site itself was immaculate and well maintained. The site uses a yard at the very back end of the site, behind the tourers section, which is busy with trucks and their 'golf style buggies' going in and out through the day, but didn't really bother us. All the staff are very polite and helpful, even the maintenance staff always say hello, which gives a nice feel to the place. A play area for the kids, but I wouldn't expect it to entertain them for hours. TV reception not very good, but again didn't bother us. I have to say, we had a great stay here and enoyed the Skelwith Fold, gave us exactly what we needed - a chilled out weeks holiday, ideally located for walks and close by visits to Ambleside, Grasmere, Windermere etc. Definitely recommend it....Read less.

You never quite know what to expect when you book a new site via an internet search, but this was one occasion where everything was perfect. Reception was easy to find with helpful staff and all the information you need for a your stay. We stayed on one of the top pitches - perfectly laid out, easy access to electrics and a short walk to the bathrooms (which are the cleanest I have ever witnessed). Because of the layout, you do not feel that you are on a massive site, in fact we rarely saw anyone but out neighbours. The shop was stocked with fresh, local produce at a reasonable price. This year was the 4th year in a row that we have stayed at Skelwith Fold in our touring caravan as we love the site and location. The facilities are excellent and could only be improved by the addition of an on-site bar or restaurant.

When leaving with a touring caravan, the junction after the bridge at clappersgate will test your car/caravan match, especially if you have to stop at the junction. The junction is very steep. This is our second stay and won't be the last.

Brilliant site. Spotless site, immaculate toilet blocks, brilliant drying room and washing facilities. Brilliant play area.

Can't rate this park high enough.

Only ever stayed on premier pitches which are excellent.

Poor wifi but that is normal in the area so no reflection on the park.

Only slight criticism is that the shop could be better stocked with more snacks and treats and could look at the prices of items sold as a little on the pricey side (£1.25 for a small bottle of coke).

Woodland walks are fantastic.

We took a dog and lived the free gift given which was a torch and dog poop bag holder, great idea.

Have stayed on some sites where external caterers provide food on set nights ( fish and chip van on a Friday and pizza van on a Saturday). This may be worth trying to progress to add the extra sparkle to the things on offer but overall very happy caravaner 😀...Read less.
