We have been staying at Skelwith Fold for many years (at least 27). It never disappoints us and we always feel a sense of calm when we arrive. We have seen it develop over these years - and the vast majority of changes have been for the better - although the park has always been excellent. The only change which is less than great is that it is now always worth booking in advance - years ago we used to just turn up and we always found a pitch!...Read less.

We are regular visitors.

Attended bonfire for 1st time (not been able to before because of work). It was brilliant! Well done, all involved.

Only 1 thing which I can find a little annoying is timing of toilet cleaning (I know it has to be done and there are other toilets) but 9.20am is, I think, right in middle of the busiest time, particularly if people are on holiday and having a lie in etc. Most other caravan parks, I have stayed in, clean around 11.30am. I do recognise that there are probably reasons why but it is my only criticism....Read less.

We came to the campsite as it was recommended by a neighbour. We were looking for something to do as a family for bonfire night with a view to taking our camper van so we came and stayed for one night, and bought tickets for the bonfire and firework display with food.

On arriving at the campsite we were immediately struck by the cleanliness and standard of the facilities. It is very well maintained and situated in a perfect location, near to areas of local interest and surrounded by woodland.

We reported to the reception which was within a well stocked shop, with everything you need, and with good quality produce. The staff were knowledgable, friendly, very helpful, and happy! We were given clear instructions on where to park our camper and directions to the shower facilities and also the recreation ground ready for the bonfire and fireworks, where there was a clear itinerary for the evening.

We bought some wine from the shop (and wasn’t ripped off which is unusual!), everything we looked at was priced reasonably.

The site is well signposted with plenty of toilets and showers, which are clean, well maintained and modern.

The bonfire and fireworks were great and clearly a lot of effort had been spent on this. The food available in the evening was of a high standard and there was a variety of drinks available, again reasonably priced but you were able to take your own drinks and food in if you wished.

Live music by the ragtag misfits was ok!

There were games for the kids, welly wanging, coconut shy and shoot and score football, which my two kids loved.

We had an amazing stay and will definitely return, one of the nicest campsites we have been on, made even better by the fantastic staff.

Thanks Skelwith Fold!...Read less.

We have taken our Touring Caravan to Skelwith Fold twice this year, and most definately will be going back next year. The site is situated just minutes from Ambleside with a bus stop outside if you want to leave your car. The road to the site is a little challenging in places when you’re towing an 8 meter long caravan, but that’s Lake District roads for you!!! The site itself is abundant with wildlife, immaculately kept and bigger than you think! Facilities are excellent (I am very fussy about site toilets/showers) but these are also spacious and immaculately kept. There’s a well stocked shop with everything you need and even a little library. They are the only facilities we have used but there are many more. Definately worth the trip....Read less.

Situated within a quiet area of the Skelwith Park (NB. this was Low Season at the end of October and after school half-term time, so can't speak for other times). Skelwithfold is a very good site. It has excellent facilities that are clean and warm in the winter. There are also good size pitches and friendly staff. lovely site set in a 'wood'. you access it along a wiggly road but room to pass lorries etc on it (not at speed!) . site has a long driveway through woods, and the entire site is on a hillside split up into cul-de-sacs with lots of trees separating areas. There are loads of statics and a couple of areas for tourers. These are hard standing and mostly flat, although some slope, but as you can choose your own pitch that shouldn't be a problem.

Due to the trees, you don't feel crammed in and the site is very spacious, but you don't get any views of the local stunning scenery . bus stop at the drive entrance, but be warned it's a long walk uphill to return to your caravan if you have tired little feet with you.

Toilet facilities were well organised and very clean, bonus of under floor heating.

Library room is fantastic ( heated too if you fancy having a read in there on a cold wet day. Even has a selection of children / teen books.

Playground is at the bottom of a hill, so whilst great ( even has a fake grass football pitch ) it gets very boggy and muddy in the rain as water collects there. even so, staff were out cleaning the equipment so it's clearly looked after.

No bar but plenty in Ambleside which is a couple of miles stroll away ( mostly on a footpath, not the road).

Staff are very friendly and have lots of local knowledge.

TV reception doesn't exist in some areas, neither does mobile phone coverage, but there is a phone on site, and computers in the library.

Shame it costs so much, even in October, or we would be back more often...Read less.

We love this site due to both its location, within easy reach of many of our favourite Lake District places and the ambience and beauty of the site itself. Just walking through the woods on site is an experience - we've seen red squirrels and deer and a short stroll out the back gate to Skelwith Fold hamlet leads to amazing views of the Langdales. Its a great place to stay with a dog to walk through the woods.

We love to leave the car behind and walk to places like Coniston, Elterwater, Little Langdale, Grasmere or climb Loughrigg Fell, often utilising the local bus service or taxis to get back.

This is my favourite Caravan Park so I hope it will remain accessible to tourers and not go over to just premium statics as some other sites have done.

The toilet blocks are kept very clean and importantly for the weather we often get - are kept lovely and warm!

A few more hooks to hang stuff in the washrooms and in the shower cubicles would be appreciated....Read less.

I recently stayed at Skelwith Fold with my husband and Mother in Law. The staff could not have been more helpful. My Mother in Law is disabled and we were given a pitch as close to the disabled bathroom facilities as could be. She said that the facilities were the best that she had encountered of all the sites she had been with us too. Indeed, all caravan sites should have a look at Skelwith Folds bathroom facilities and take a leaf out of their book. Large showers with plenty of hot water that did not turn off after 10 seconds. Underfloor heating kept the block lovely and warm and dried the shower floors. I would recommend though that if you wanted a TV signal to go for the premium pitch. We had no TV signal for the week and would have asked to change if we had not had the Mother in Law with us. I do think that the normal pitches should be given TV points as standard as the standard pitches are still not particularly cheap. I don't mind being cut off from emails but lack of a decent wifi that could be used on site to check weather forecasts and attractions to plan the next day was a major major niggle. I paid for few hours wifi but the signal was hideous so I was very relieved I hadn't bought a bigger bundle. Asking customers to pay for wifi nowadays is something few businesses do and considering the price of over £40 a night for site fees, is free wifi not something that Skelwith Fold could be offered to customers?

Stop saying you are planning to do it and just do it. In this day and age it is an essential, I had read other reviews about the wifi service and had hoped, that as mentioned in follow up to reviews, that this would be sorted before our holiday.

My husband and I hate going coffee/lunch with our family and then taking our phones straight out but on this holiday it was essential as we needed to check weather and attractions when we were out and about. Checking the internet is normal done when our children are in bed as we prefer to chat as a family over coffee or meals.

Would I consider going back? Only if the wifi was sorted....Read less.

Fantastic site actually we are considering buying a static there next year

In all honesty you won't be disappointed we have a 26.5 ft tourer fitted in with ample room spare and you get a bench and ha.rd standing

We opted for the premium pitch I also checked out the standard ones they aren't bad either.

Good onsite shop

Be aware though if using a sat nav it might take you up a very very narrow lane avoid it I didn't I managed to get back down but that's caravaning. It's clearly signposted I missed it though.

Thinking of going back next week.

We were very impressed with the quieteness of the park considering its size. The heated washroom & facilities were the best we've come across (especially the underfloor heating in the showers...bliss). The shop was really well stocked & reasonably priced too. Whilst the wooded areas of the site were beautiful, our standard pitch under an oak & pine tree was far from ideal with both cones & acorns pummelling down onto the roof of the caravan day & night. The woodland walks were spectacular & had we children with us, I'm sure they would have loved the childrens play area with tarzen slide amongst the facilities. The cost per night is a little pricey but we think worth it. Access to & from the site is tricky in places with narrow bridges & steep hills at junctions, but it is possible if timed well....Read less.

Our recent visit to Skelwith Fold caravan park we found that the site facilities were very good and the staff all friendly which dose help considering the extreme wet weather we were having. The only downside was the pitch size and the ground. We had booked a premium pitch as it is advertised as having extra room and a picnic table. The pitches are no larger in fact smaller than any site we have been on before ( been caravaning for last 15 years) , you have your van and awning the picnic table is only 2 foot from the side of the awning and is a slabbed area which infringes awning pegging out. The ground is solid rock under the gravel and rock pegs cannot go in easily or at all. Your car is then parked in front of the picnic table so gives you an idea of how small the pitches are. We were not the only unit having problems with the state of the ground, heard many hammers hitting pegs and getting no were....Read less.

We stayed in a hideaway for 3 nights, it was great, staff are very welcoming and showed us how everything worked. The hideaway itself is small but well contained and fully stocked with everything you might need including washing up liquid and sponge! During our stay we asked for extra pillows and they brought them up straight away, the staff are very helpful and attentive. We walked to the local Talbot pub which was a short walk through the back gate, highly recomend the food there, as the Steak and Ale pie was delicious! During our stay we explored all the towns around us, easily accessible via car. The added little extras such as a bottle of Proccesso and the BBQ were a nice touch and the wifi wasnt too bad at times (however only one of us could use it at once). Overall we had a great relaxing time and would highly recommend couples to go for a little peaceful break away. A few improvements would be extra bin bags in the hideaway (as we filled the bin!), ashtrays provied to stop litter, a bin near the BBQ area and extra pillows in the cupboard just in case!...Read less.

Great site. Little difficult to get to for beginner tourers. Daughter loved play facilities. Beautiful location and very dog friendly.

Touring shower facilities are quite a walk from Coppice and are limited in availability. Also quite a walk to chemical disposal from coppice too.

Would have loved a more local pub/restaurant. We were told The Drunken Duck Inn was close to the site but attempted to walk it with a 4yr old and it was too far so had to turn back, would be nice to just pop for an evening walk and a pint. Ambleside also a little too far to walk with a young child so meant we had to drive into town and pay extortionate parking charges, but thats not the sites fault.

We have stayed twice this year and loved the site....Read less.

Site offers good play facilities and some wonderful walks to Elterwater, Loughrigg and also into Ambleside.

Overall very well kept with good facilities but there are a few quirks to be aware of:-

- site wifi is by satellite link so quite expensive, but effective if you are in reasonable range of the site masts. There is no 3G/4g, and sometimes had no service on phone, though texts seemed to get through. TV signal ok - got about 35 freeveiw stations

- glass recycling is only at the site entrance, which is at least half a mile or more from the top part of the site we were staying on

- shower blocks are finished to a very high standard but have only 3 toilets and 3 showers so not great when busy

- pitches well spaced and marked, but some may be a little short for longer outfits...Read less.

The pitch sizes are good, although a little bit close to each other, however there is more than enough room for an awning and car parking.

Second ones came, a family. Firstly, over hanging onto our pitch and secondly one of kids decided to throw a stone at a tree of which it hit our van. No respect from either side for fellow campers.

We were very pleasantly surprised with our stay here; in a small tourer, we stayed at the very top near the wash facilities. I liked the idea you could choose your own pitch rather than being allocated. I'd read some reviews about pitches being cramped together - can't say I really noticed this. There is no separation fences/hedges etc between pitches and they are all on hard standing ground (no grass options), but we very comfortably had the caravan + awning + car alongside and this was not squeezed in. Admittedly, a few pitches further back did look a little closer, these possibly more for camper vans?, but they still looked ok. Toilet facilities very good (the block by us anyway, the other one round the other side nowhere near as new). Possible only criticism was there was only 3 showers & 3 toilets in the block, although I never needed to wait for the shower (1st week August), and floor is heated in showers!!! It's a large site, mostly of statics, but very well laid out and set in large woodlands area. Brilliant for walks, long or short, especially because we had a dog, all straight from the site. The site itself was immaculate and well maintained. The site uses a yard at the very back end of the site, behind the tourers section, which is busy with trucks and their 'golf style buggies' going in and out through the day, but didn't really bother us. All the staff are very polite and helpful, even the maintenance staff always say hello, which gives a nice feel to the place. A play area for the kids, but I wouldn't expect it to entertain them for hours. TV reception not very good, but again didn't bother us. I have to say, we had a great stay here and enoyed the Skelwith Fold, gave us exactly what we needed - a chilled out weeks holiday, ideally located for walks and close by visits to Ambleside, Grasmere, Windermere etc. Definitely recommend it....Read less.

Reception was easy to find with helpful staff and all the information you need for a your stay. This is our second stay and won't be the last.

Brilliant site. Spotless site, immaculate toilet blocks, brilliant drying room and washing facilities. Brilliant play area.

Can't rate this park high enough.

Only ever stayed on premier pitches which are excellent.

Poor wifi but that is normal in the area so no reflection on the park.

Only slight criticism is that the shop could be better stocked with more snacks and treats and could look at the prices of items sold as a little on the pricey side (£1.25 for a small bottle of coke).

Woodland walks are fantastic.

We took a dog and lived the free gift given which was a torch and dog poop bag holder, great idea.

Have stayed on some sites where external caterers provide food on set nights ( fish and chip van on a Friday and pizza van on a Saturday). This may be worth trying to progress to add the extra sparkle to the things on offer but overall very happy caravaner 😀...Read less.

Loved the environment, especially the woodland walks. Stayed one night only so didn't do justice to the lovely surroundings. Site deserves its recent award. The shop was very well equipped and reception staff were most helpful and welcoming.

The only downside was that we were given a wrong code for using the facilities. We made up with the uncode-accessed loos and showers on the way the children's play area. (Hence not able to comment fully on these facilities.)

This glitch was more than compensated for by the helpfulness of Ray. Our jockey wheel out of action, he helped us set up and even insisted I leave to catch up on my meeting at Skelwith Bridge. He and a colleague helped us get off in the morning, too. What a lovely man - calm, efficient and gracious!

A spacious park but because it is laid out amongst trees in smaller areas it feels very private and every location is surrounded by nature. Wonderful access to the hills, pubs, villages etc accessed by just walking out the gate. We didn't need the campervan all week and walked and cycled everywhere.

The only criticism as it has quite a lot of permanent homes that all look very similar it can be a bit disorientating at night in the dark. Stayed in the Coppice, which, as we had no toilet facilities was a bit of a trek in the middle of the night to the toilet block, but there were closer van sites we could have chosen. Toilet facilities were spotless and the shop had an excellent range of food and caravan accessories....Read less.

Although the park is well kept and the staff very friendly, it has the feeling of being residential. I think this is due to how many statics caravans and permanent caravans with awnings are set up. We were very surprised to learn that you are unable to use a washing line of any description this really is not very helpful or environmentally friendly, this includes the fact there are no sinks to hand wash clothes, so you have to use the machines.

We also think that the entrance off the main road needs some thought, as the traffic moves quite fast along it, a couple of times we went to pull out and a car came around the corner, maybe a mirror angled on the other side, make signs in both directions as you approach the entrance more prominent ( like caravans turning )....Read less.

We have stayed at Skelwith Fold many times over the years, and have recommended it to many friends . These are some of the reasons

We did a motorbike tour and decided to go glamping for the first time. We have to say that we were very impressed!! The hideaway was awesome, lovely kitchenette and cooked lots whilst we were there. The sofa was big and comfy and the bed is ingenious and so simple to use! The shower was lovely and big and lots of warm water and the little heater was only needed for about 10 minutes as it got warm so quickly. The site itself is lovely, very clean and tidy. The shop is great filled with everything you might need. A nice walk into Ambleside and a good base for lots of places.

There were only two downsides, the mattress on the pull down bed was very soft for me but you can't cater for everyone and the only other thing was it would be nice if the on site shop was open a little later as we found it shut by 6:20pm. What a stunning site. I visited with my wife and 4 young sons recently in our tourer and booked again the day we came home.

We stayed up near the play area to make it easier to keep an eye on the kids. The walks and bike riding opportunities in the woods is fab. The play area just as good. The whole area is fantastic for days out with the lake a couple of minutes away, stunning walks, fishing and bike rides. Couple of good pubs local. We walked to the drunken duck which is very nice if not a bit steep!

My only suggestion to make the place better would be another wash room closer to the top end of the site nearer to the tourers at the park and it does seem a shame that the function room isn't used as a cafe and bar!!

All in all, lovely site! Back again soon!...Read less.

Skelwith Fold is a beautiful site. Facilities are the best we have been to on a touring caravan site. Toilets/showers are clean and warm. The park and all weather football pitch keeps my kids happy for hours and they love riding their bikes around the roads on site and all the paths through the woodland. My dog loves it there too, the paths are ideal for a lovely long or short walk. The shop is well equipped and the staff are so friendly and welcoming and helpful. The site is easy to access and only 5 mins from Ambleside, where there are some lovely cafes. We have been 3 times now and will definitely be going back soon....Read less.

Just come back from a lovely week at Skelwith Fold. Well kept site and toilet blocks. Unfortunately our pitch at the top of the Garden area had no TV reception or Wi-Fi. Although we don't go on holiday to watch TV. The shop was disappointing - I was looking forward to fresh local sourced meat but it needed to be ordered by 9am Monday and we arrived Monday afternoon. No sausages or bacon in the shop or muffins.

For a site in the Lakes, Skelwith Fold is fantastic due to the walks straight from the site. The Skelwith Bridge Hotel offers great pub food and your dogs are welcome. Great stop for a drink before you walk back to site. The Drunken Duck has the most amazing view from the picnic benches outside - slightly pricey food but very good.

All you need can be purchased in Ambleside....Read less.

We thoroughly enjoyed our recent 4 night stay in a Hideaway. We were very impressed by the personal reception from Jackie and the team and the introduction to the spotless facilities within the accommodation.

The foldaway bed was surprisingly comfy and easy to use and the high quality bedding ( already made up on arrival) added to the experience.

We loved the thick, fluffy towels in the bathroom and the heated towel rail .

Jackie was extremely helpful e.g. providing extra pillows and the loan of a bike shed to accommodate our mountain bikes securely.

After a full day cycling we decided to make full use of the cooking facilities and stunning setting, enjoying eating on the decking and making use of the BBQ area - the complimentary bottle of Prosecco and truffles was a bonus!

Thanks for a lovely break - we will definitely be back!...Read less.

This was our first visit to Skelwith Fold and we were very pleasantly surprised with the layout of the site. We generally avoid sites with too many static caravans but the area allocated to tourers was set apart from them and they were also well looked after. All in all a nice site, however we found that the areas designated to motor homes , campervan and some caravans was like been pitched in a car park, all gravel and surrounded by trees and no grass to sit but some may love it. The biggest gripe was the toilet and shower, this was nearly 5 minutes walk away from our pitch which was on the coppice and had only 2 toilets and 1 shower for a lot of tourers, there are others but even further away. All very clean though. Don't be put off this site it is very nice I guess if you have your own facilities in your tourer it's great. If you intend walking its half mile to get off site and around 40 minutes to Ambleside where there is plenty of great walks, no pub within short walking distance of site but bus stop outside site.
