Beautiful area. Great park with spacious pitches. Staff really friendly and helpful. The facilities were great. The under floor heating in the showers, the drying room and launderette all helped to keep us from returning home early on one of the wettest weeks we've ever had. My only gripe was the cost of the wifi which I feel should have been free with the premium pitches when you can get free wifi with a cup of coffee in town....Read less.

We chose this park to try out our first time in a campervan and we couldn't have chosen better. The staff were very friendly and helpful in getting us set up but proved even more helpful when we had problems with our awning the next morning. A sincere thank you to Ray and Alan for helping us get back on the road :). A very steep learning curve for us, but we were greatly encouraged by their enthusiasm for camping!

The site is absolutely beautiful and extremely well maintained with lots of grounds in which to exercise the dogs.

My issues of this site only centre on two areas

Staff - Has this site chnaged hands in the last couple of years? The staff are not now as friendly and attentive as they once were and it seems more business like than family run.

WiFi - Why on earth is a site which is by far the most expensive in the UK charging for WiFi? Most pubs/restaurants in the Lakes provide it free of charge. I accept that the site is remote and coverage is poor but to charge is plain day light robbery.....sort it out Skelwith Fold and put your customers before your profits!!...Read less.

Touring shower facilities are quite a walk from Coppice and are limited in availability. Also quite a walk to chemical disposal from coppice too.

Would have loved a more local pub/restaurant. We were told The Drunken Duck Inn was close to the site but attempted to walk it with a 4yr old and it was too far so had to turn back, would be nice to just pop for an evening walk and a pint. Ambleside also a little too far to walk with a young child so meant we had to drive into town and pay extortionate parking charges, but thats not the sites fault.

Site offers good play facilities and some wonderful walks to Elterwater, Loughrigg and also into Ambleside.

Overall very well kept with good facilities but there are a few quirks to be aware of:-

- site wifi is by satellite link so quite expensive, but effective if you are in reasonable range of the site masts. There is no 3G/4g, and sometimes had no service on phone, though texts seemed to get through. TV signal ok - got about 35 freeveiw stations

- glass recycling is only at the site entrance, which is at least half a mile or more from the top part of the site we were staying on

- shower blocks are finished to a very high standard but have only 3 toilets and 3 showers so not great when busy

- pitches well spaced and marked, but some may be a little short for longer outfits...Read less.

We were very pleasantly surprised with our stay here; in a small tourer, we stayed at the very top near the wash facilities. I liked the idea you could choose your own pitch rather than being allocated. I'd read some reviews about pitches being cramped together - can't say I really noticed this. There is no separation fences/hedges etc between pitches and they are all on hard standing ground (no grass options), but we very comfortably had the caravan + awning + car alongside and this was not squeezed in. Admittedly, a few pitches further back did look a little closer, these possibly more for camper vans?, but they still looked ok. Toilet facilities very good (the block by us anyway, the other one round the other side nowhere near as new). Possible only criticism was there was only 3 showers & 3 toilets in the block, although I never needed to wait for the shower (1st week August), and floor is heated in showers!!! It's a large site, mostly of statics, but very well laid out and set in large woodlands area. Brilliant for walks, long or short, especially because we had a dog, all straight from the site. The site itself was immaculate and well maintained. The site uses a yard at the very back end of the site, behind the tourers section, which is busy with trucks and their 'golf style buggies' going in and out through the day, but didn't really bother us. All the staff are very polite and helpful, even the maintenance staff always say hello, which gives a nice feel to the place. A play area for the kids, but I wouldn't expect it to entertain them for hours. TV reception not very good, but again didn't bother us. I have to say, we had a great stay here and enoyed the Skelwith Fold, gave us exactly what we needed - a chilled out weeks holiday, ideally located for walks and close by visits to Ambleside, Grasmere, Windermere etc. Definitely recommend it....Read less.

Really good site. Feels quieter than most as there are so many static caravans ( which means less than 100% occupancy) and woodland setting. Great shop, library, staff.

Only improvement I can think of (which my daughter complained about) was the lack of an indoor recreation area, with pool table, tv etc, which would be invaluable given the Lake District's weather!...Read less.

You never quite know what to expect when you book a new site via an internet search, but this was one occasion where everything was perfect. On arriving at the site you are greeted with a peaceful entrance winding through trees and awesome scenery. Reception was easy to find with helpful staff and all the information you need for a your stay. We stayed on one of the top pitches - perfectly laid out, easy access to electrics and a short walk to the bathrooms (which are the cleanest I have ever witnessed). Because of the layout, you do not feel that you are on a massive site, in fact we rarely saw anyone but out neighbours. The shop was stocked with fresh, local produce at a reasonable price. The library and washing area were neatly laid out and assessable. We had taken our bikes which made it a lot easier to navigate around the site and out 7 year old daughter felt safe at all times. This year was the 4th year in a row that we have stayed at Skelwith Fold in our touring caravan as we love the site and location. The facilities are excellent and could only be improved by the addition of an on-site bar or restaurant.

When leaving with a touring caravan, the junction after the bridge at clappersgate will test your car/caravan match, especially if you have to stop at the junction. The junction is very steep. This is our second stay and won't be the last.

Brilliant site. Spotless site, immaculate toilet blocks, brilliant drying room and washing facilities. Brilliant play area.

Can't rate this park high enough.

Only ever stayed on premier pitches which are excellent.

Poor wifi but that is normal in the area so no reflection on the park.

Only slight criticism is that the shop could be better stocked with more snacks and treats and could look at the prices of items sold as a little on the pricey side (£1.25 for a small bottle of coke).

Woodland walks are fantastic.

We took a dog and lived the free gift given which was a torch and dog poop bag holder, great idea.

Have stayed on some sites where external caterers provide food on set nights ( fish and chip van on a Friday and pizza van on a Saturday). This may be worth trying to progress to add the extra sparkle to the things on offer but overall very happy caravaner 😀...Read less.

Loved the environment, especially the woodland walks. Stayed one night only so didn't do justice to the lovely surroundings. Site deserves its recent award. The shop was very well equipped and reception staff were most helpful and welcoming.

The only downside was that we were given a wrong code for using the facilities. We made up with the uncode-accessed loos and showers on the way the children's play area. (Hence not able to comment fully on these facilities.)

This glitch was more than compensated for by the helpfulness of Ray. Our jockey wheel out of action, he helped us set up and even insisted I leave to catch up on my meeting at Skelwith Bridge. He and a colleague helped us get off in the morning, too. What a lovely man - calm, efficient and gracious!

The only criticism as it has quite a lot of permanent homes that all look very similar it can be a bit disorientating at night in the dark. Although the park is well kept and the staff very friendly, it has the feeling of being residential. I think this is due to how many statics caravans and permanent caravans with awnings are set up. We were very surprised to learn that you are unable to use a washing line of any description this really is not very helpful or environmentally friendly, this includes the fact there are no sinks to hand wash clothes, so you have to use the machines.

We also think that the entrance off the main road needs some thought, as the traffic moves quite fast along it, a couple of times we went to pull out and a car came around the corner, maybe a mirror angled on the other side, make signs in both directions as you approach the entrance more prominent ( like caravans turning )....Read less.

We have stayed at Skelwith Fold many times over the years, and have recommended it to many friends . These are some of the reasons

The site is easily accessible

Well run site with wildlife literally at your caravan door.

The site shop is well stocked so you don't have to drive to town for supplies.

You can choose your own pitch on arrival.

You can walk from the site into Ambleside .

We did a motorbike tour and decided to go glamping for the first time. We have to say that we were very impressed!! The hideaway was awesome, lovely kitchenette and cooked lots whilst we were there. The sofa was big and comfy and the bed is ingenious and so simple to use! The shower was lovely and big and lots of warm water and the little heater was only needed for about 10 minutes as it got warm so quickly. The site itself is lovely, very clean and tidy. The shop is great filled with everything you might need. A nice walk into Ambleside and a good base for lots of places.

There were only two downsides, the mattress on the pull down bed was very soft for me but you can't cater for everyone and the only other thing was it would be nice if the on site shop was open a little later as we found it shut by 6:20pm. Other than that - we look forward to returning!...Read less.

Our first visit to the park and we were very impressed. So much is right about the park it is genuinely difficult to fault any aspect. For the sake of the review and constructive feedback I would suggest the touring pitch areas can appear <slightly> crowded, especially once awnings are up and cars are parked. What a stunning site. I visited with my wife and 4 young sons recently in our tourer and booked again the day we came home.

We stayed up near the play area to make it easier to keep an eye on the kids. The walks and bike riding opportunities in the woods is fab. The play area just as good. The whole area is fantastic for days out with the lake a couple of minutes away, stunning walks, fishing and bike rides. Couple of good pubs local. We walked to the drunken duck which is very nice if not a bit steep!

My only suggestion to make the place better would be another wash room closer to the top end of the site nearer to the tourers at the park and it does seem a shame that the function room isn't used as a cafe and bar!!

Just come back from a lovely week at Skelwith Fold. Well kept site and toilet blocks. Unfortunately our pitch at the top of the Garden area had no TV reception or Wi-Fi. Although we don't go on holiday to watch TV. The shop was disappointing - I was looking forward to fresh local sourced meat but it needed to be ordered by 9am Monday and we arrived Monday afternoon. No sausages or bacon in the shop or muffins.

For a site in the Lakes, Skelwith Fold is fantastic due to the walks straight from the site. The Skelwith Bridge Hotel offers great pub food and your dogs are welcome. We thoroughly enjoyed our recent 4 night stay in a Hideaway. We were very impressed by the personal reception from Jackie and the team and the introduction to the spotless facilities within the accommodation.

The foldaway bed was surprisingly comfy and easy to use and the high quality bedding ( already made up on arrival) added to the experience.

We loved the thick, fluffy towels in the bathroom and the heated towel rail .

Jackie was extremely helpful e.g. providing extra pillows and the loan of a bike shed to accommodate our mountain bikes securely.

After a full day cycling we decided to make full use of the cooking facilities and stunning setting, enjoying eating on the decking and making use of the BBQ area - the complimentary bottle of Prosecco and truffles was a bonus!

All in all a nice site, however we found that the areas designated to motor homes , campervan and some caravans was like been pitched in a car park, all gravel and surrounded by trees and no grass to sit but some may love it. The biggest gripe was the toilet and shower, this was nearly 5 minutes walk away from our pitch which was on the coppice and had only 2 toilets and 1 shower for a lot of tourers, there are others but even further away. All very clean though. Don't be put off this site it is very nice I guess if you have your own facilities in your tourer it's great. If you intend walking its half mile to get off site and around 40 minutes to Ambleside where there is plenty of great walks, no pub within short walking distance of site but bus stop outside site. Shop well stocked. I don't want to be a grump but that's just our opinion of our stay. Ps dogs will love it....Read less.

Stayed at the site as friends were staying in Ambleside B&B's.

Had a lovely smiling receptionist on arrival who had a pack with all the information we would need during our stay - code for WC and barrier to the site.

Initially we were very surprised regarding the size of the site as we were not expecting it to be so big. However, we really liked the natural way the site was laid out. We did not feel too close to other campers although the site was not full with at least 1 pitch between each caravan.

The site had a lot of static caravans and also tourers long term as well as the usual short-stay tourers. The site stated no tents but a tent was pitched close to our pitch.

The WC and shower facilities were not used by us but we had a look round and noted that they were very secure (keypad on entry) and very clean.

The pitch itself had hook-up, easy access to drinking water, waste water disposal and chemical disposal. I am not sure what the amp was for the hook-up but found no problems when using various low voltage electrical appliances as we have on other sites in the past.

The site had a children's area but as we have not got children we did not visit this area.

All pitches were hard-standing but a lot of caravans still had their awning up without any trouble.

We are relatively new to caravanning as we had always camped in a tent in the past. On arrival we had problems with attaching the hose on a new gas bottle as it appeared to be leaking. A passing member of staff helped and said it was due to the hose. The site shop supplied this at a reasonable cost of £8.

We would definitely book here if we revisit Ambleside or the surrounding area....Read less.

Great site, must rate as one of the best we've stayed at with our tourer over 5 years. Minor gripe over not being able to put up a gazebo or even a storage tent as we went with our granddaughter this time and were suffering from lack of storage space. I can understand why you might want to control the things people put up by their caravan, but given the size of other awnings on site, and the practical need to store muddy boots, wet clothes etc from hiking, it seemed a bit petty. A fabulous location with well stocked on-site shop. As OAP`s we used the free bus pass services. Buses are hourly from the site entrance. It is quite a long walk from the site area`s to the entrance and while it`s an easy downhill outward walk, coming back is quite steep and may be challenging depending on personal fitness. The site itself is beautifull, well maintained and spic and span throughout. All visitor toilet blocks, dish washing area`s etc. are superbly maintained and spotless. TV reception in the premium pitches is perfect but elsewhere is spasmodic. (Or so I`m led to believe). Wildlife is abundant and on several visits we have seen deer roaming between the caravans. The approach road from Ambleside is narrow and bending in places but does not provide any danger when driving with reasonable care. It is possible to meet lorries and the odd bus but we have never had problems with passing on-coming traffic. All in all then, a great site for walkers and nature lovers or even for a quiet break in fabulous surroundings. We`ve been here four or five times now and will definitely be coming again. We thouroughly recomend this Park....Read less.

We stayed recently for three nights, our first time at the site. We were with our two young sons and pitched near the play area on coppice. We all loved it and will definitely return. My only gripe would be the lack of a chemical waste facility at the end of the site, I had to drive to the waste point with the box in the boot as it was too far too carry, not great. Apart from that it was spot on, all the staff were very friendly and the pitches on coppice are of a good size....my son says it would be better with some more 'adventure' type play equipment like at your sister site nr Lancaster! Congratulations to Skelwith Fold - We were very happy with all spects of the site, the layout and sizes of the touring pitches, touring facilities and the very polite and helpful staff members. The location was idyllic and peaceful.

Our only one minor concern was leaving the site on the way home and re-joining the main road to Ambleside after the narrow bridge - the main road was busy and the steep 1 in 4 approach and stop at the junction is challenging....Read less.

In March 2017 we returned to the site for this our third visit with our touring caravan. We have always liked the location, the site facilities and specifically the fully serviced pitches. Each time we have paid the requested deposit and then the balance at time of arrival. This recent time, our booking was followed up by an email requesting full payment two weeks prior to our arrival. I phoned and was told settle on arrival, only to receive another email demand for full payment. On receiving the demands I checked T's & C's on web site and on booking documents. these were either non existent, out of date or confusing. I understand from subsequent discussions with your very helpful reception staff, that these terms were being corrected and that the 'full prior payment' demand may be only applied to online bookings. In our case, we pre-book holidays throughout the year and I would not revisit or recommend a site that demanded payment prior to arrival. It is hoped that your new booking conditions can be clarified back to us and that it will allow us to spend future holidays with you on terms previously experienced.

Finally, on previous visits we have appreciated the availability of fresh bread. Whilst still available by previous day order, it would be good to have had additional supplies accessible during the day. Otherwise we found the shop to be excellent.

Without the payment concern, you would have received an unqualified/glowing review....Read less.

My wife and I stayed at Skelwith for 4 nights in March .Initially she made an inquiry from an internet search . From this I felt that it was very expensive for a tourer ,but after visiting the Skelwith stand at the NEC ,the young lady there convinced us that it wasn`t and as we wished to go to the Lakes we thought we would try it .

I can honestly say that it is possibly the best managed site that I have ever been to ,well thought out well staffed and always clean and tidy . It is also ( as I initially thought ) the most expensive site I can recall ( but you get what you pay for in this life ). If I could find fault with anything it would be the small number of showers and toilets ,which I would think would be very annoying in any time other than low season ,and if you are cycling ( which we were ) the local roads were very dangerous and some of the cycle paths were only suitable for motocrossers !

Would we go again ............probably not ,but looking at the number of statics and seasonal tourers there ,a lot of people would. Excellent staff , without exception, always polite and helpful....Read less.
